NORWEGIAN LOCALS COLLECTION. A most attractive collection well written up, mint and used, housed on old-fashioned album leaves, specifically focuses on the stamps, overprints and an item of postal stationery for various regions of Norway, the core of the collection are the issues of the 1880s/90s and is chronologically ordered from issues of Aalesund through to Tronso and includes important perforation studies, for example, in Aalesund you'll find perf 10 ¸, 11 ¸ and compound perfs, similarly the interlocked logo issues of a884/85 imperf and even a lettercard of 15 Sep 1884 with 5o monogram present as well, next is Drammen starting with very early 1869 lithograph imperf in skilling currency followed by 1sk blue imperf which we believe is probably the second design, also present are the 1888 3o, 5o, 10o and 25o large pigeon post stamps followed by the imperf, posthorn issues, then Grimstad with the private bypost issues for 1887, Hammerfest not only with the "sailboat and cliff" issues but with the 1888 surcharges including mint and used inverted overprints, collection continues with Holmestrands, Horten, Kragero, Levanger, Mandal (incl. blocks of four), Namsos with overprints, Steinkjer, Tromso with an extensive study of the attractive reindeer issues, watermarks, different papers, overprints, sheet varieties, etc., certainly an impressive collection of a few hundred stamps which would be difficult to reassemble today as these 19th century issues are quite elusive, viewing highly recommended.Est. $750-1000

PORTUGAL AND COLONIES RECENTLY UNEARTHED NEVER HINGED PRE-WWII ISSUES HOARD. When this walked through the door we could hardly believe what we were seeing, we knew it was good but as we were in the middle of moving offices so we did not have time to investigate it fully. This is a phenomenal accumulation of early 20th century with some important scarce items present, specifically when never hinged which is very unusual for the overwhelming majority of these issues, especially from 1910 to 1930. The vendor tells us this was accumulated at the time as quantity new issues by his grandfather. When it first came to us it was in old opaque glassine envelopes and we have spent a little time in seeing the depth of what is here and putting the stamps onto cards. Often the best values are here, for example with Azores of the Ceres head, the key values, i.e. the 30cts, brown on pink paper (Scott retail hinged #196 at $80 each) are here x5, as well as the 20cts violet brown on greenish paper, etc. Please note that in our opinion many never hinged copies are at least ten times scarcer than hinged. Other great items include Macao with a top value 5 patacas rose, Scott retail #238 as hinged at $350, as well as the best value of all the 3 patacas pale turquoise Scott retail #237 as hinged at $425, among many other good Ceres definitive values. Also seen the 1920/22 parcel post series of Portugal to the 10e chocolate (#Q1/Q17, $228 Scott retail for hinged) with two complete series present, as well as two complete series of the Azores parcel posts (#Q1/Q17), Timor Ceres issues 1914/23 with 21 different including all the pataca values (#180/182), similarly Portugal proper, Portuguese India, Azores, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea, Cape Verde, etc, etc. This is a delightful accumulation of very tough stamps to view, in tip top condition. It is ideal for any specialist, collector or dealer looking to replenish stocks or buy that which is hardly ever on the market today, for Portugal and her colonies.Est. $4000-5500

This mint accumulation represents a recent discovery made in southern France of a substantially important Romanian holding and is offered intact as received, while it has been presented to us completely uncatalogued an easy projection would be ¥30-40,000 but expect substantially less in Scott's US$, this is a vintage accumulation with much turn of the century with one of the highlights being Scott #176-85 by the hundreds with some of the denominations in quantities of over 1,000, some similar quantities in subsequent issues incl. several hundred 1908 50b (Scott #213) and through to the "Timbru du Ajutor" the long revenue and much more back-of-the-book incl. postage dues, interesting section of Scott unlisted incl. "Serviciul Telegrafic" revenues and other esoteric material, a holding like this will be very hard to come by again and it's worth pondering how the Romanian stamp market will unfold now that it is a member of the EEC, huge potential here making viewing highly recommended.Est. $1500-2000

RUSSIA MOSTLY 19th CENTURY POSTMARKS ACCUMULATION. A rather 'chunky' accumulation housed in 2 small stockbooks and a stack of pages, holding virtually all 19th century and early 20th in a wide range of conditions including 100s of the early issues of the 1850 and 1860s. There are two number ones both with manuscript cancels the first being four margined but torn, the second just three margined and much cut into at the bottom. However things then improve with some better condition on the early 'Coat of Arms' to the 30kop, it would be correct to say there are some outstanding examples here among the hundreds of copies of the first issues. This accumulation formed over many years was 'waiting to be processed' into the main collection as appropriate. Further later issues also present from the 1880s to 1920s with some fascinating imperf multiples. Also seen Russian Levant, non Scott listed White Army(?) propaganda issues, including revenue types etc. Huge potential, viewing recommended for those that like putting organization into chaos, very much a good winter's month of work.Est. $1200-1800

SWITZERLAND MASSIVE STOCK, 1860s -1960s. arranged in an oversized European stockbook in Zumstein order containing thousands upon thousands of mint and used stamps generally up to 10 each, starting with a respectable showing of about 170 used Seated Helvetias, then beginning with 1862 -1881 issues, the stock is arranged into parallel mint and used sections and continues in this fashion to the very end, significant mint stock begins with the 1900 UPU issue including some blocks, and continues with a fair display of Standing Helvetias, real strength in William Tell issues including blocks and much NH from this point, a truly massive stock ready for retail sale.Est. $5000-7500

SWITZERLAND STOCK. An incredible bulging volume, starting from important classic Switzerland through to modern, with emphasis on used rather than mint. We estimate the catalog value to be approaching 280,000SF (approx $250,000 equivalent at the time of going to press), perhaps more. Starting off with classics (and only considering those that are clearly genuine) with a couple of imperf Genevas, as well as a couple of 4 margined 'Orts-post' followed by literally dozens of Rayon types (including certs.), there must be about 40x 10rp rayon IIs, over 30x5rp rayon, including a couple of dark blues and reds and at least 2 dozen x15rp rayon IIIs Then follows the imperf stubeli and in keeping with the pattern of this fantastic holding, there must be at least 5x2rp gray, well over 50 5rp brown with various different shades and a good array of postmarks as well, similarly well over 50x 10rp blues, about 30x 15rp reds and 15x 20rp oranges, about 2 dozen x40rp greens and 3x 1francs. Virtually every denomination in quantity, with many four margined copies. So it continues, in order, this time with the perforated 'sitzende Helvetias', with hundreds of them from the 2rp gray, the 3rp black, the 5rp gray, 10rp blue, 20rp orange, 30rp red, 40rp green, key value 60rp brown to the 1fr gold and the 1fr bronze etc. Please note also mint is beginning to emerge here, with the latter on the right hand side of the page and the former on the left, often resulting in whole lines being filled with several dozen stamps. There are 10 lines to a page, so often there are a few hundred stamps per page, neatly displayed stamp on stamp, often crammed to capacity. Then follows the numeral issue types from the 2rp to the 15rp complete, followed by the 'stehende Helvetias' with of course several hundred stamps here as well. There is page after page continuing on the 'stehende Helvetias', leading onto turn of the century with more good items in quantity, loads of high values and the beginnings of the 'Pro Juventutes'. for example, not only are there dozens of #B1, there must be at least 15 of these series of the better #B2s and #B3s used and half a dozen series unused. In fact all the B# numbers here are well represented, often with several dozens of each. This holding which was formed by stripping collections over several decades by a compulsive buyer of Swiss collections and accumulations. It also has great strength in the 20th century too, with high values galore with virtually everything in complete series, through to the modern era. There is also a good range of m/s, inc. 'National Fete', 1941 PJ, through to 1942/43 Zurich and Geneva, leading up to lifeboat of 1945 used, etc etc. An excellent opportunity to replenish stocksEst. $5000-6000

SWITZERLAND ASSORTMENT. A balance lot with potential, much of it being here as it needed considerable organization and is therefore placed in the 'balance' category. However, this balance deserves a good viewing and if you are lucky enough to be the buyer a good sorting will yield tremendous dividends. Some of the better things seen here include covers from the 19th century 'Stehende' Helvetias, even stampless, leading onto colorful p/c early 'Red Cross' allegory in superb used condition. Yet more stampless and then airmails on cover, m/s on cover, feldpost, soldier mail, etc. The stamps begin with quite a bundle of old glassine envelopes, inc. Pro Juventutes in quantity used, similarly more obvious better m/s inc. hinged Lifeboat 1945 and Lunaba never hinged of 1951. One of the most interesting sections was the color trials (Wertzeichendruckerei) in sheet format of 50 in brown, green, orange, purple, blue, red, etc. as well as a nice collection of soldier mails, displayed in old fashioned album pages with several dozen all different mint. Then more obvious United Nations overprints with scarce Scott #7O1 through to #7O20 (cat: $275), etc. 20th century has earlier better mint definitives including Numeral types and then the more obvious semi-postals, airmails inc. blocks of 4, etc. There is also a little stockbook with reference copies of the Zurich 4, the Poste Locale 5c, the Geneva and various used Strubelli all genuine to the 40rp, etc. please inspect.Est. $900-1200

SWITZERLAND NEW ISSUES GROUP. A valuable holding of about fifty, mostly thick, new issue registered letter packages, mostly from the 1990s through to the year 2004 including year sets, everything mint as well as used, all Swiss quality! We have only looked in a few of these packets and we note for example the scarce 'embroidery' miniature sheet issue, mint and used, as well as singles mint and used which we have placed on hawid cards. The new issue cost/face value will be a small fortune, as virtually everything seems to be in blocks of four mint and blocks of four nice used, as well as year sets, defins, coils, etc. Definitely an exciting lot with tremendous potential, deserving a good viewing.Est. $800-1000

PRINCESS DIANA WORLDWIDE TOPICALS HOLDING. This absolutely hurt the vendor when it came to placing this in auction. Much of this focusses around Princess Diana's 21st birthday and of course the Royal Wedding. Virtually everything is in the original letter packs that they were sent out in, from the new issue supplier, containing not just British Commonwealth but as importantly Worldwide. Every pack has its invoice and since these were supplied from Gibbons of London, everything was originally charged in pounds. An average 'Advice Note' of charges would be about £30 ($60 at the time of going to press) and there are about 150 of them at a probable cost therefore of £4500. Accompanying this are the actual collections themselves of British Commonwealth for these topics again with virtually every permutation, costing well over £1000 at the time. Some of the more expensive items do have very low printing numbers and come from countries not directly linked to B.C. i.e. Tchad (gold), Central African Republic (souvenir sheets), Bhutan, Ivory Coast (imperforates), Comoro Islands, to name but a few. An opportunity for a dealer, especially for the Princess Diana content.Est. $1200-1600

WORLDWIDE TOPICALS WITH MUCH MIDDLE AND FAR EAST. An extraordinary holding weighing about 150lbs, mint and used, with much that is complete in series, of virtually every conceivable topic. There are about 230 envelopes, more often than not housing sheets or sheetlets, etc. There are generally speaking in each envelope 50 to 100 series each, however there are occasionally thicker envelopes which will have a few hundred of each. There is more Middle than Far East, with some of the countries represented here include Indonesia, Dubai, Cambodia, Iran, Syria, Portuguese India (very interesting even with some 19th century mint material here in quantity) Mongolia, Maldive Islands, China ('panda' series and miniature sheets in quantity), Japan, Fujeira etc. This is also a very difficult lot to view as these are large mostly thick opaque envelopes, however a reasonable 'guestimate' would be that two thirds would be used and one third mint (never hinged). Topics here include horses, costume, space technology, athletics, archaeology, WWF, animals, paintings, soccer, fish, skiing, Olympics, gymnastics, bridges, ships including triptych se-tenants in mint sheetlet format etc to name out a few. There are also large quantities of mint miniature sheets, as well again a wide variety of topics. This is definitely a holding for 'stamp workaholics', i.e. for those entrepreneurs that market topics on the internet.Est. $3500-5000

TOPICALS ACCUMULATION WITH MUCH FAR EAST AND FRENCH COLONIES. An interesting selection of material with some unusual, particularly in the form of imperforates of former French Colonies, Belgian Colonies, and even Europe with San Marino. One volume specifically devoted to these imperforates, all accompanied by certificates, suggest that the number of printings in the imperforates are no more than 2,500 to 3000 in each value, with the exception of the San Marino. For example, Tchad with 1977 'de Gaulle' complete, Mauritania athletes complete, 1981 Niger Coast vintage motor cars complete, Congo 1978 Soccer players, Zeppelin m/s 1977, Rwanda - those magnificent men in their flying machines series of 8 (1500 printed), Concorde m/s, etc. If the printing numbers of these various series is correct, then the retail value will easily run into many thousands for this one volume alone. Then Korea, dozens of m/s on cover focusing mostly on the 1968 Olympics, in these pages also further French Colonies inc. Central Africa, gold embossed m/s, low number printings of regular Mauritania, Djibouti, as well as Ireland with equestrian m/s, imperf Philippines athletics, Wallis and Futuna, Macao inc. m/s etc. Another book concentrates on earlier Olympics running the gamut inc. better m/s and even non Scott listed such as Romania - the 'Eternal Flame' blue perf 5 lei and then the 6 lei red imperf both never hinged, - in this also further French Colonies mint never hinged, all one of a kind, etc. Another volume loaded with Far East, specifically South Korea with better m/s as well as commem series, again all mint never hinged, as well as further very colorful mint former French Colonies, i.e. Niger, Dahomey, Upper Volta, New Caledonia, etc. Pre WWII with two of the first Greek airmail series complete to the drachma mint, various Central and South America, etc. Another volume with more Far East, this time Vietnam, North and South, again including better series, leading onto the Republic of Taiwan, and then page after page of further colorful issues with particular strength in Middle East including lots of non Scott listed items, imperfs, varieties, etc. The sixth and final volume focuses on Switzerland, this time including offices, with many blocks of 4 mint and used, etc. with several dozens, probably hundreds of complete series here including miniature sheets, no doubt with a high replacement/new issue cost.Est. $1400-1800
