POSTAL HISTORY HOARD 1890-1945 two boxes from the family attic of an old time stamp collector who made his living as a travelling salesman during the first half of the 20th century based in Fort Smith AR. His travels took him to every state west of the Mississippi River and thus there are envelopes from hotels across the entire Western United States as well as business correspondence in the form of reports filed back to the home office. In addition to the Hotel corner cards, we also noticed advertising covers from dozens of different businesses including "Beck's Beer," various Coffee companies, Newspapers and Printers, Railroads and much more. The salesman was obviously a stamp collector since we also encountered mail from old time dealers along with a smattering of philatelic mail that includes some better FDCs from the 1930s as well as a few flight covers. The largest single group is World War II mail, mostly from GIs writing home that includes some patriotic cachets. Among the personal correspondence we noticed an accumulation of picture post cards from the period as well as an interesting group from a son attending school at Stanford University about 1905-10 including some contents and one with a note pertaining to the Great Earthquake. A close examination will almost certainly reveal many more interesting items with lots of Fine-VF material.Est. $1500-2000

US NAVAL COVERS an impressive somewhat chaotic holding of these issues from dozens, maybe hundreds, of these ships including commercial as well as philatelic, predominantly USA pre-WW2 as well as the modern era. There are well over 2000 covers here, representing the balance of a large estate of military postal history. This is virtually all the naval section and there are many covers, including early for ships docking at foreign ports as well. Lots of the items here are of course illustrated and as far as we can very little, if any duplication. Virtually everything here was waiting to be put into order and that was never done. Despite continual buying over the years, some of the ships seen, chosen at random, are U.S.S. Lexington (presidents review May 1934) U.S.S Oglala July 1941, U.S.S Oglethorpe (November 1955), U.S.S Okanogan commemorating the capture of airfield at Cape Gloucester Feb 4th 1949, U.S.S. Kanawha when stationed at Pearl Harbor 5th June 1939, U.S.S. Loraine County as part of the Atlantic fleet, U.S.S. Josephus Daniels, 10th Oct 1965, U.S.S. Cavaluer, 30th May 1960, U.S.S. Cayuga 25th April 1990, U.S.S Long Beach visiting Bremerhaven January 18th 1962, U.S.S Chicago 16th May 1938, U.S.S. Canberra 1st Aug 1958, U.S.S. Valdez 22nd 1980, U.S.S Macon 22nd August 1958, U.S.S. Louisville 23rd Nov 1932, U.S.S. Saint Paul 7th December 1960, U.S.S. Salem 14th June 1954, S.S Texaco, U.S.S. Trenton July 4th 1975, etc, also some Foreign This will keep the naval specialist dealer or collector busy. Much fun to go through and the distinct probability of many good finds.Est. $1500-2000

UNITED NATIONS

1293

SUBSTANTIAL UNITED NATIONS ACCUMULATION four large cartons that apparently contain the consolidated collections of two like-minded collectors who both started from the first issue of 1951 by acquiring sets, souvenir sheets, sheets, FDCs, stationery and souvenir cards. The first carton contains five Lindner hingeless albums for the New York, Geneva and Vienna issues while an additional Scott album covers the same territory though this collection includes the 1955 Souvenir sheet. The next entire carton is nearly filled with mint sheets though it also includes two shoeboxes. The first shoebox holds used stamps while the second contains mint that are mostly in blocks. The last three cartons contain hundreds of envelopes just as they were received by the collectors from the philatelic agency. We did not open every envelope, but apparently there are issues all the way to the late 1990s and early 2000s. It will take several days just to sort all the material in these cartons, never mind organizing and pricing it all!Est. $6000-8000

UNITED NATIONS ACCUMULATION. Comprehensive 1950s/2000s NY, Geneva and Vienna singles, blocks, sheets, mini-sheets, S/S, FDC incl flag sets, souvenir cards, Human Rights and Endangered Species folders, booklets, etc., main collection in sixteen Lindner “T” albums with generally an NH and used/cto example for each issue plus a couple of stock books, the Fleetwod Flag issue folders and assorted loose material, some duplication, mostly F-VF, huge face value and filled with all the desirable topicals.Est. $1800-2500

UNITED NATIONS HOLDING an opportunity to purchase a very interesting holding of U.N. representing all that was extracted by a dealer from worldwide lots and placed in a U.N. box. There are at least two dozen albums or stockbooks loaded with issues, with many sets and premium sheetlets and above all a stack of mint face. This holding represents all the U.N. Offices with much U.S. The owner estimates the face value equivalent cost of $6,000, though this looks conservative. Better items noticed such as #38, yet it is the modern that the U.N. enthusiasts should concentrate their efforts viewing. Spend some time on this one.Est. $1500-1800
1296/

UNITED NATIONS HOLDING Monstrous accumulation with 1000s of complete mint series stuffed to capacity in 3 boxes, incl #38, so called better printing on #149 ie Berlin etc, plate blocks etc. To give you a flavor of what is here, just the first series alone Scott #1 -#11, has about 70 complete mint series and presumably this continues on for much of the other early Scott numbers. It is so stuffed it is difficult to see the depth of what is here, yet there is order in the cramming, nevertheless it is almost an impossible viewing. The new issue/face value cost must be huge. If you are looking to buy UN inexpensively then look no further.Est. $1500-2000

BRITISH AND WORLDWIDE COVERS AND POSTAL HISTORY

1300
WORLDWIDE POSTAL HISTORY HOLDING a last minute entry, representing a much awaited consignment for the balance of a large holding we have had the privilege to offer, over recent auctions. This definitely represents the best of an incredible accumulation from the 19th century onwards, this time with about 3,000 covers. We have decided to offer this intact, as received without splitting it up into smaller units. In our overview it was easy to see that there are hundreds of postal history items worth $50 – $100 +++ each. Please see the color photo plates to give you an idea of what to expect. This however will be no substitute for an actual viewing of all, as there is much here to research. The key being that this accumulator went for the unusual or seldom seen in postmarks not just stamps. There are many more items that are not in the photo plates that also require knowledge, categorizing in order to establish how good they are. Although this is the best and last section from this source, it is also the most chaotic and the most fun. Viewing highly recommended, lots of covers here that deserve close inspection, as there is far more here that first meets the eye.[v]Est. $35000-40000

EXTRAORDINARY OCEAN MAIL COLLECTION. Few thousand stampless period through 1980s "souvenir" covers and picture postcards with many neatly arranged and annotated on homemade pages in 38 binders, extras "to have been added" in two banker boxes, the collector went on the premise that if the piece of mail crossed a body of water (ocean, sea, river, lake, coastal region, etc.), it belonged in the collection, consequently the range of covers is quite large - stampless, stamped, "outside the mails", paquebot, markings or c.c. of wide assortment of shipping lines, personal, commercial, scarcer rates, even philatelic in nature, included among the collection are many postcards showing the various ships (incl Belgian special cards for the Ostende-Dover steamers and 1927 set of ten Hamburg-America Line "Reliance" views of Scandinavia trip) or port views along with the occasional piece of ephemera (interior view postcards, schedules, photocopies of articles, personal correspondence, etc.), among the many areas covered in depth we note worldwide mails from Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, Mediterranean mails from the 1760s incl disinfected, French mails with better 19th century frankings, mails of Belgium and Netherlands, Scandinavia, covers into the US from scores of different countries, via Suez, Indian Ocean area, trans-Pacific (both ways), South &: Central America, etc., generally F-VF, a fresh and fascinating lot of this always popular area. IMPORTANT WORLDWIDE BALLOON MAIL COLLECTION well written-up housed in four albums. One of the best balloon mail collections we have had the pleasure to offer with over 320 individually described covers, without considering lots of collateral items here as well. It is very well researched, described cover for cover, page for page, in four substantial albums chronologically organized. Volume 1 starts from 1926 through to 1960 and has 92 Covers, volume 2 1961 through to 1965 and 65 covers, volume 3 1966 through to 1974 and has 70 covers and finally volume 4 1975 right up to 2000 with 96 covers. Starting off with Poland there is a very rare Warsaw – Swistocz cover, 17th October 1926 carried by the Balloon ‘Poznan’ and postmarked upon arrival, accompanied by rare 1zloty ‘Poctza Balonowa’, backstamped in Grodno, exceptional. Then a 1927 Luxembourg – Roodt experimental balloon flight on postal card, also balloon races from the 1920s and 1930s i.e. Gordon Bennett Internationals with lots of interesting cachets, also seen a scarce Warsaw – Szczuczyn Bialost commercial mail carried in the balloon ‘Legjonowo’, interesting Brussels – Ceskytesin, July 1936, flown by de Muyter in the ‘Belgica’, next month in the same balloon Warsaw – Archangel USSR, as well as Warsaw – Peliszcze with illustrated cachet, followed by June 1937 Brussels – Tukumo and much, much more. A few others taken at random include ERP Salzburg – Kufstein a twice flown card, Kinderdorf balloon mail 1951, Linz – Tulln, Ulenpas Castle – Apeldoorn and this is just in the first volume. Time and space does not permit further description other than to mention that there is much authographed material and other important collateral in this magnificent collection. Apart from scarce items from the 1920s and 1930s, some of the later flights are also better with very low numbers flown. This collection is highly recommended as this is such a diverse yet comprehensive work on balloon mail. Like its rocket mail counterpart (also in this auction) the sum is more than its individual parts. An excellent opportunity to bid for a superior balloon mail collection, offered intact as received.[v]Est. $3500-4500

MODERN FOREIGN FIRST DAY COVER COLLECTION 1975-1990 huge accumulation filling ten cartons, includes dozens of albums, file boxes and thousands of loose covers. Several of the albums contain "collections" created by the Postal Commemorative Society or similar collections. We noted seven albums of World Wildlife topicals, 1981 Royal Wedding, more than twelve albums of Europa topicals. Three albums are collections of National Wildlife labels while there are also albums of Duck stamps from Australia and Canada. We also noted German ETB cards and Great Britain PHQ cards by the hundreds. One filebox contains hundreds of recent Russia FDCs while another is exclusively Australia. Similarly, there are boxes of recent Great Britain, Channel Islands and Ireland FDCs especially with Colorano "silk" cachets, and finally there are several small albums of Western Europe FDCs from the late 1960s to early 1970s. The owner spent a small fortune at the new issue prices for this material and thus, this is a fabulous opportunity to acquire some recent material at a substantial savings.Est. $3000-4000

FASCINATING WORLDWIDE COVER STOCK two binders containing a selection of well over 100 better covers priced in the $50 to $200 range with a few higher. The first binder starts with a section of Philippines Flight covers from the late 1920s to early 1930s followed somewhat incongruously by a group of Germany and Berlin FDCs from the early 1950s. This book ends with one Great Britain 1840 Penny Black cover and a 1865 United States Civil War patriotic. On the other hand, the next volume starts with a 1936 Italy Rocket Flight cover then skips to a worthwhile section of France and French Colonies that deserves special attention since it includes a 1942 French Equatorial Africa cover franked by a very scarce 'France Libre' overprint issue. Switzerland is the next country encountered and includes a 1912 Semi-official Charity issue on card followed by several souvenir sheets on cover. We also noticed a 1936 cover from Russia addressed to Spain during the Civil War with censor markings and finally, a nice group of Baltic States and Latin America. An eclectic group to say the least, however, every page holds your interest for more than a few moments.[v]Est. $3000-4000

VALUABLE GREAT BRITAIN &: OFFICES COLLECTION a magnificent collection mostly used, with some stamps in particularly nice condition that would make spectacular results if offered as individual lots, due to the quality. The collection starts with 1840 1d Black (5 with margins all around). followed by an enormous margined 2d blue, with red Maltese Cross and a remarkable 1840 2d pair, check letter QH/QI with two lightly struck Maltese Crosses again with generous margins and of stunning appearance, this is followed by another1840 2d blue. Then a range of 1841 penny reds and 1841 2d blues imperfs, then good 1847 embossed 6d, 10d and 1/-. Also more line engraved with a study of perf penny reds and 2d blues, leading on to the surface printed with lots of useful values including 8d,, 10d, 1/- and 2/- (4 x 2/- blue), as well as a scarce 2/- brown. Further high values QV inc 5/- plate 2, then a 10/- watermark anchor with Glasgow cds, as well as a rare pound square brown with light oval cancel, signed Richter, and with Maltese Cross watermark. On the same page a £5 orange with neat Belfast cds strike a tip top example. Then 1883 the 2/6d to £1 brown crown watermark, with light oval postmarks, followed by the even scarcer pound orbs watermark, signed 3 times, with a superb cds cancel in the center, a beautiful stamp. Also present the £1 green QV etc. Then on to the EDVII complete to pound, followed by KGV seahorses again complete to pound, as well as various other seahorse printings. Then the PUC £1, this time mint and virtually complete mint thereafter including Waterlow QEII £1, as well of course all the commems with the phosphors etc. Finally on the GB a very good range of officials inc Admiralty Official with EDVII 3d, Board of Education, also seen Government Parcels, then the O.W. with 5d QV superb used on piece etc. The British Post Offices abroad also equally strong in harmony with the GB, specifically the Morocco Agencies with QV, EDVII to 10/- attractively used, seahorses including scarce 12 pesetas on 10/- superb used and much more. Then the post offices in Turkey collection including the key value the rare Levant 1piastre o/p on 2d EDVII beautifully used on piece in Beirut (less than 480 extant), leading through to seahorses 180 piastres on 10/- mint etc. Speculating a catalogue value would not be that precise other than it being very high. However it should also be mentioned that it is probably not that relevant, as some of the many good individual items here are in such good condition that they would easily sell for more than Gibbons. Nonetheless catalogue probably in the order of £70,000, about $135,000 at the time of going to press. A fabulous collection offered intact as received. A joy to view.[v]Est. $30000-35000

GREAT BRITAIN, 1841-1849 IMPERF, ONE PENNY RED HOLDING with Maltese Cross pmks only on parade, ‘1066 and all that’! A very nice range of material , housed in one volume, substantially 3 or 4 margined copies, only Maltese Crosses. The minimum catalogue is £45 each in SG and of course in such a range there will be better Maltese Crosses here . Furthermore a quick inspection will reveal there are better shades, i.e. deep red browns, orange browns and very probably some lake reds. The key is that since they are all Maltese Crosses there will definitely will be Penny Reds from the ‘black’ plates. The overwhelming majority of these have been assembled by check letters. i.e. ‘AA’ through to ‘TA’ in attempted reconstructions. There are 1066 copies here which means that the minimum catalogue here is £47,970. At the time of going to press this is approximately $90,000. However with all the distinct possibilities of better finds in this original old time holding, there should easily be an equivalent of $100,000++. This is an excellent opportunity for a collector or dealer with knowledge of these elusive and complicated imperforates. (The describer was sent to Reading Gaol).[v]Est. $4000-5000

GREAT BRITAIN HOLDING, 19TH &: 20TH CENTURY normally went you get lots of GB stuffed onto stockcards cataloging tens of thousands of pounds, the condition is often poor throughout, especially when the bulk of the volume is in the 19th century. Here this very intense lot of line engraved with penny blacks to QEII high values alongside QV, EDII, KGV etc and occasionally excellent condition. In order to appreciate what is here this lot should be looked at carefully as all grades of condition are present, with good condition often in the better stamps. Starting off with 1840 with 3 1d blacks with 3 margins with faults, 1sh embossed 3 large margins close at bottom a good looking copy, 1sh embossed pale green this time 4 large margins and a very good looking stamp, thinned at top but only in the margin, then further 1850 2d blues by the dozens with various plate numbers, similarly with penny reds including many excellent condition and better types. Then surface printed galore and various other values 9d bister brown (2) through to 1887 Jubilees mint to 1sh, various 2sh6d QV and a £1 green with 2 oval registered cancels etc. KEVII 2sh6d,10sh (3), all of the latter are in good condition, also the basic definitive set mint to 10d including 4d brown and green (3), 5d (2), 2sh6d mint etc. KGV Seahorses to 10sh, KGVI all the way through to QEII 1/3d in qty NPY, etc. Once this is displayed properly and put into circuit books the potential retail will be thousands of dollars. The approxiamate SG should be around £40,000. An opportunity for a dealer.[v]Est. $4000-4500

Of over 350 folded letters illustrating the history of British mails from creation of the Office of postmaster General by Colonel Henry Bishop through the reforms of the "Uniform Penny Post" in 1839, mounted on exhibit pages with descriptions in Danish, plus many extras in cover albums beginning with a small section of 17th &: 18th century items featuring "Bishop's marks" and "mileage marks", mostly within Scotland or Lincolnshire, then starting in earnest with the heart of the collection, Penny Post covers mostly to or from London though many from smaller towns or villages, then finishing with a strong section of Foreign Mails with emphasis on Scandinavia including Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway, also several to Switzerland, Germany and Italy and a handful from India, one of if not the best single item is an 1812 cover addressed to Sir William Scott, High Judge of the Admiralty London, with straight line "Above Privilege" handstamp, other covers of special interest include an 1836 "Soldiers Letter" from India to Essex, another cover with "Posted Since 7 Last Night" straightline handstamp to Austria, includes scarce postmarks from small towns such as 1767 Landovery Wales to London and unusual routings such as 1823 Chichester too Dublin, a cover from Picadilly forwarded to Calcutta India, altogether a firm foundation for an award winning exhibit.[v]Est. $9000-12000

ADEN

1377

ADEN POSTAL HISTORY ESTATE WITH COLLATERAL this is a fantastic holding of well over 250 covers, representing the exhibition pages and general work and research stock of one the most respected Aden postal history collectors, the late Reverend Harding. Housed in one large bulging file-box with many files within the box, QV to QEII – substantially pre-1920 – for mail going in and out of the port of Aden. For example in GB to India, correspondence through Aden from the 1870s and 80s with single usage of the 5d indigo SG #169, making the correct rate from Paddington to Nasik via the see post office (cat £225+). Also seen GB this time with 5d green with separate covers from GB to India, one from Leicester the other from Bath to Bombay to Mussoorie in the Northwest Province respectively, SG #193 (cat £275 +). Also seen interesting penny red and surface printed combination of 2x1d and 6d gray to make the 8d rate for the 1878 to Madras and Cape of Good Hope to India again via sea post office etc. Needless to say there is a lot of India to the motherland via Aden, as well as further GB on exhibition pages well written up with single usage 1/- rates early surface printed. Reverend Harding with his extensive research occasionally uses the word ‘rare’. We recommend the specialist spend some time studying his extensive work note details, not only just because they are scholarly but they also will add further perspective in this still pioneering field – for example Aden Steamer Point cancel with one of the earliest known recorded, as well ‘short life’ sea post office strikes with extensive detail of differences in diameter, size and shapes of the lettering and much more. Also seen other countries linked with Aden, again often earlier including Bulgaria, Belgium, Netherlands etc. Naturally the use of Indian stamps in Aden also seen, as well as used postal stationery QV and EDVII, even fascinating collateral of that period. As far as KGV to QEII is concerned there are also some good covers inc ‘X’ censor strikes in combination with paquebots, also such cancels on Aden KGVI airletters etc. Other areas include commercial usage of Qu’aiti state inc Adam Camp cancels and registered Aden Camp cancels to transatlantic destinations, KGVI RAF red and black censor markings, shifted overprints on KGVI postal stationery certainly scarce and much more, inc Dhows, occasional postmark studies outside the postal history, interesting correspondence from Yemen, early French postal stationery via Aden. Time and space and considerations unfortunately do not permit further description. The above is just a flavor of this extraordinary diverse holding of postal history of Aden, formed over a lifetime of collecting. Many covers here easily worth $50 - $100 ++, very few if any will be worth less than $10. It will very probably be some time before you see such an interesting group of Aden postal history offered again as one lot.[v]Est. $3500-4000
