1300			WORLDWIDE POSTAL HISTORY HOLDING a last minute entry, representing a much awaited consignment for the balance of a large holding we have had the privilege to offer, over recent auctions. This definitely represents the best of an incredible accumulation from the 19th century onwards, this time with about 3,000 covers. We have decided to offer this intact, as received without splitting it up into smaller units. In our overview it was easy to see that there are hundreds of postal history items worth $50 – $100 +++ each. Please see the color photo plates to give you an idea of what to expect. This however will be no substitute for an actual viewing of all, as there is much here to research. The key being that this accumulator went for the unusual or seldom seen in postmarks not just stamps. There are many more items that are not in the photo plates that also require knowledge, categorizing in order to establish how good they are. 1301			EXTRAORDINARY OCEAN MAIL COLLECTION. Few thousand stampless period through 1980s "souvenir" covers and picture postcards with many neatly arranged and annotated on homemade pages in 38 binders, extras "to have been added" in two banker boxes, the collector went on the premise that if the piece of mail crossed a body of water (ocean, sea, river, lake, coastal region, etc.), it belonged in the collection, consequently the range of covers is quite large - stampless, stamped, "outside the mails", paquebot, markings or c.c. of wide assortment of shipping lines, personal, commercial, scarcer rates, even philatelic in nature, included among the collection are many postcards showing the various ships (incl Belgian special cards for the Ostende-Dover steamers and 1927 set of ten Hamburg-America Line "Reliance" views of Scandinavia trip) or port views along with the occasional piece of ephemera (interior view postcards, schedules, photocopies of articles, personal correspondence, etc.), among the many areas covered in depth we note worldwide mails from Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, Mediterranean mails from the 1760s incl disinfected, French mails with better 19th century frankings, mails of Belgium and Netherlands, Scandinavia, covers into the US from scores of different countries, via Suez, Indian Ocean area, trans-Pacific (both ways), South &: Central America, etc., generally F-VF, a fresh and fascinating lot of this always popular area. The first cover album contains about 50 items that include $1.30 Zeppelin on a card and $2.30 Zeppelin on cover followed by 50c 'Baby' Zeppelin covers (9), plus dozens of other Zeppelin flights as well as a few Akron-Macon covers plus one or two airship 'Los Angeles' items and finally a small section of period picture post cards depicting Zeppelins. 1309			IMPORTANT WORLDWIDE BALLOON MAIL COLLECTION well written-up housed in four albums.One of the best balloon mail collections we have had the pleasure to offer with over 320 individually described covers, without considering lots of collateral items here as well. It is very well researched, described cover for cover, page for page, in four substantial albums chronologically organized. Volume 1 starts from 1926 through to 1960 and has 92 Covers, volume 2 1961 through to 1965 and 65 covers, volume 3 1966 through to 1974 and has 70 covers and finally volume 4 1975 right up to 2000 with 96 covers. Starting off with Poland there is a very rare Warsaw – Swistocz cover, 17th October 1926 carried by the Balloon ‘Poznan’ and postmarked upon arrival, accompanied by rare 1zloty ‘Poctza Balonowa’, backstamped in Grodno, exceptional. Then a 1927 Luxembourg – Roodt experimental balloon flight on postal card, also balloon races from the 1920s and 1930s i.e. Gordon Bennett Internationals with lots of interesting cachets, also seen a scarce Warsaw – Szczuczyn Bialost commercial mail carried in the balloon ‘Legjonowo’, interesting Brussels – Ceskytesin, July 1936, flown by de Muyter in the ‘Belgica’, next month in the same balloon Warsaw – Archangel USSR, as well as Warsaw – Peliszcze with illustrated cachet, followed by June 1937 Brussels – Tukumo and much, much more. A few others taken at random include ERP Salzburg – Kufstein a twice flown card, Kinderdorf balloon mail 1951, Linz – Tulln, Ulenpas Castle – Apeldoorn and this is just in the first volume. Time and space does not permit further description other than to mention that there is much authographed material and other important collateral in this magnificent collection. Apart from scarce items from the 1920s and 1930s, some of the later flights are also better with very low numbers flown. This collection is highly recommended as this is such a diverse yet comprehensive work on balloon mail. 1311			MODERN FOREIGN FIRST DAY COVER COLLECTION 1975-1990 huge accumulation filling ten cartons, includes dozens of albums, file boxes and thousands of loose covers. Several of the albums contain "collections" created by the Postal Commemorative Society or similar collections. We noted seven albums of World Wildlife topicals, 1981 Royal Wedding, more than twelve albums of Europa topicals. Three albums are collections of National Wildlife labels while there are also albums of Duck stamps from Australia and Canada. We also noted German ETB cards and Great Britain PHQ cards by the hundreds. One filebox contains hundreds of recent Russia FDCs while another is exclusively Australia. Similarly, there are boxes of recent Great Britain, Channel Islands and Ireland FDCs especially with Colorano "silk" cachets, and finally there are several small albums of Western Europe FDCs from the late 1960s to early 1970s. 1312			FASCINATING WORLDWIDE COVER STOCK two binders containing a selection of well over 100 better covers priced in the $50 to $200 range with a few higher. The first binder starts with a section of Philippines Flight covers from the late 1920s to early 1930s followed somewhat incongruously by a group of Germany and Berlin FDCs from the early 1950s. This book ends with one Great Britain 1840 Penny Black cover and a 1865 United States Civil War patriotic. On the other hand, the next volume starts with a 1936 Italy Rocket Flight cover then skips to a worthwhile section of France and French Colonies that deserves special attention since it includes a 1942 French Equatorial Africa cover franked by a very scarce 'France Libre' overprint issue. Switzerland is the next country encountered and includes a 1912 Semi-official Charity issue on card followed by several souvenir sheets on cover. We also noticed a 1936 cover from Russia addressed to Spain during the Civil War with censor markings and finally, a nice group of Baltic States and Latin America. There are about 175 Covers in the first volume and 105 in the second without considering collateral i.e. vignette specimens Dr A.J de Bruijn’s launch in different colors, early 1937 Stephen H. Smith worlds first rocket train label the ‘Herbert E. Barber’ (1000 printed) or primary source promotion items enclosures and maps, Project Gemini leaflets etc, bringing this up to about 300+ items. The postal history starts off with India Calcutta-Bedford registered from Stephen Smith himself, going through to the 1950s with actual rocket mail from the Research Institute in Inyo County Californa with green imperf label (300 only), followed by 1951 Greenwood Lake rocket with imperf red label attached and tied by rocket pmk, followed by very colorful Clark County Nevada with all rockets 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 present. Then important missile mail commemorating the first official missile mail delivered by the U.S. Navy Regulus I missile from the U.S.S. Barbero and the next page with A. J. de Gruijn two stage rocket 618 (carrying 300 cards) grubby yet much character. 1324			WORLDWIDE ECLECTIC POSTAL HISTORY ASSORTMENT group of about 200 items mostly from Western and Eastern Europe between 1900 to 1945 with emphasis on items in the $25 to $50 range. The single largest section is from Austria including one or two Lombary-Venetia covers. The next largest group is from Switzerland which includes several better items including a pretty 1949 International Labor Official cover with a hand-painted cachet to Atlanta GA. Scandinavia is a strong section that includes a group of six tiny cards of 1924 for the "Trans-Polar Flight Expedition" and while we are on the subject of expeditions, we should mention an unusual 1960 "Saltoro Expedition" in the Himalyan mountains of Pakistan. Another interesting item is the 1960 Liechtenstein Europa on FDC followed by a 1946 Spain First Flight to New York and a set of two 1938 Flight covers from San Marino prepared for the meeting of Hitler &: Mussolini. We also noted a group of about one dozen Russia covers as well as another group of Hungary, Poland and a few Baltic States. 1326			ZIEHER 'STAMP ON STAMP' POSTCARDS group of about 150 picture postcards with the vast majority published by Ottmar Zieher about 1900-1910 along with a few other cards created by imitators, of these 150 cards, we noted about 30 cards used during the period including a few used in the country whose stamps are pictured on the front and another handful used during the 1930s at a Czech stamp show. 1333			WORLDWIDE PAQUEBOT CANCEL ASSORTMENT 1902-1965 group of over 125 covers and picture post cards mailed on the high seas. The vast majority have either Great Britain or United States stamps with a smattering of other countries such as Japan and various Caribbean islands. The entire group is almost evenly divided between covers and picture postcards with the earliest item a rather tatty pictue postcard franked with a Spanish stamp in 1902. We also noted about ten or twelve other early picture postcards before 1920 including one 1912 German Seapost cancel and one 1910 Cuba. The largest proportion are dated from the late 1920s to about 1940. In this group we spotted a rather scarce 1938 "Pacquebot/Zanzibar" cancel and a 1935 Catapult Flight from the Bremen to New York.
