BRITISH COMMONWEALTH POSTAL HISTORY 1870-1965 accumulation of about 150 covers, postal stationery and picture post cards from nearly every corner of the Empire with emphasis on George V &: George VI covers. As usual, the country with the largest representation is Great Britain which also contains the earliest items. In this section we noted a 1937 "Round-the-World" Flight cover with stamps added in Brazil, United States and Hong Kong. The next largest section is Australia and New Zealand which consists almost exclusively of George V and George VI covers in the $10 to $25 range. The single best section is British Caribbean which includes some very attractive and quite salable George V &: VI covers. British Africa is a rather small section, however, it does include two worthwhile items: an 1893 Gambia Message &: attached Reply to Germany as well as an 1899 Transvaal cover to New York. British Pacific is presented by ten covers including a 1938 Papua New Guinea Airmail set on cover to England. Finally, there are two 1931 "Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans-Arctic Expedition" covers. A very worthwhile group that will only take a few minutes of viewing to determine the value.[v]Est. $1000-1500

ARGENTINA

1743

ARGENTINA INTERESTING HOLDING a very exciting range of material with lots of scarce items, many unusual. Of particular interest was the proofs in different colors of the ‘March of the Victorious Insurgents’ of 1930 with over 150 proofs of this series with values to the top 50 pesos, most visual, virtually everything imperforate. Other scarce material includes the not often seen 1910 Scott #160-175 mint set and then blocks of 4 of the 20 pesos and complete sheet of the 5 pesos and 10 pesos (ie 25 in each sheet), plus various other denominations all with original gum 'INUTILIZARDO' perf-ins. Also present sheets of lower values as regular material. Other highlights include the scarce o/p 1930 ‘Septiembre 6 1931’ to the 5 pesos blocks of 4 all with Solari certificates with much never hinged. Also seen a stunning looking offset of the o/p on the reverse gum side of the 5 pesos. More unusual material with a detailed study of the Eva Peron the defintives and commemoratives, including the different papers, scarce watermarks, perforation varieties, consistent plate varieties with errors in lettering often in mint multiple format with normal and error side by side, for comparison purposes etc. There are many hundreds of items here some of which will be difficult to find again. Other highlights include a 2 volume collection, as far as we can see complete from 1945 onwards mint never hinged again with all the A and B numbers, with page after page replete with no empty spaces through to the 1990s. At the other end of the spectrum is a good range of classics, particularly the ‘rising sun’ types in mint multiple format and a couple of items of pre-philatelic postal history with horseshoe Cordoba in black and again straight line Cordoba, this time in vivid red, accompanied by ‘franca’ strike. A very interesting and unusual holding of prime material for the specialist, collector or dealer, with some very unusual items present.[v]Est. $5000-6000

AUSTRIAN LOCALS

1760

AUSTRIA-DANUBE STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY, WORLD CLASS COLLECTION. Without question the best collections we have ever offered of these very interesting issues. Much is copiously written up on quadrille album leaves with extensive detail of the different issues, postmarks, Agencies etc. Starting off with the first issues of the 1866 onwards, concentrating on both Die 1 and Die 2, perf 9 1/2 through to an incredible study of postmarks such as ship cancels 'Silistria', Zriny', 'Sofie' with the accompanying express boat 'Eil Boot Sophie', Reise' - this was used for the shuttle for the Romanian port, 'Arpad', Boreas', Debrechin', 'Radetzky' etc often with colored cancels. Also seen cancels for various Agencies inc Odessa for the Russian Empire, 'Alt-Orsova' for Rumania, Belgrade for Serbia, 'Radujevas', Lom Palanka', 'Rustzuk', 'Czernavoda', 'Tulcia', 'Widdin', 'Nicopoli', 'Sistov' for Bulgaria, as well as for agencies in the Danubian Principalities such as 'Turnu Magurelle', 'Turnu Severin', 'Oltenitza', 'Ismail','Giurgevo', 'Calafat', 'Piquet', 'Gakatz', here for all issues first, second, third and forth as well as a detailed study of the different postmarks for this specific agency with circles and various different ovals types etc, 'Braila', inc scarce 'porto paye', leading on to further studies of ships/railways terminals inc 'Basiasch'. Another section of the collection unfolds to an immensely detailed small Agency cancels ,accompanied by a study of the consistent plate varieties on the sheets. Then much scholarship into the different stones, types 1 and types 2, leading on all the way to the 5th issue stones. There is also reconstruction of the ten different transfer types. It should also be mentioned that throughout this collection the different denominations with their respective colors are present, as well as error of color, as identified by this collector. Also present imperf proofs multiple format and yet more reconstruction of the ten transfer types, often categorized separately, used from the mint, as well as a study of rough perfs leading on to this time attempted reconstruction on the larger 20 transfer types! It is quite amazing how specialized this is, it is doubtful that we will see anything so profusely researched again as this magnificently displayed exhibition collection. Even more fascinating is further sections devoted to reprints, again clearly written up often with illustrations revealing the differences between these and originals, again well organized and like the originals well presented. Another section waiting to be written up are various sheets including material that this collector bought from Denwood Kelly in 1985 that was originally purchased from Felix Brunner in 1947! Finally there are this collector's working sheets and his collateral material, also important in its own right - this section somewhat chaotic in presentation as it was waiting to be incorporated into the main collection, as was the original intention of this collector. This is as astonishing of a collection of the Danube Steam Navigation Company that we have ever offered. It would be virtually impossible to replace, representing a once in a lifetime opportunity to continue developing research on these elusive 19th century classics.[v]Est. $15000-20000

FANTASTIC BOLIVIA COLLECTION on Scott album leaves, mint and used, starting off with various Condors of the 1867/68 with highlights including Scott #3 the 5c violet, Scott #6 the 50c blue, Scott #7 original gum accompanied by cert and as importantly different shades of these issues, leading on to the 1868/69 ‘coat of arms’ followed by the ‘arms and the law’ 1878 types and as far as we can see with the exception of major rarities the collection is virtually complete thereafter. Further obvious highlights include Scott #101d, the black surcharge 10c on 1c to blue, as well as Scott #183 always a tough stamp to find. You name it is very probably here, page after page replete with complete series. Another interesting feature of this collection is that periodically the collector made his own pages of errors and non-Scott listed material including imperfs between, imperfs pairs, centers inverted, lots of o/p varieties etc and the airmails which are very strong as well. Among the several hundreds of stamps time should also be spent on the 1930 airmail surcharges, opts in bronze 5c on 10c to 1b and the zeppelins 1.50b on 15c through to 6b on 35c etc, Probably the most interesting section here is back of the book. Overall this is a very well rounded collection, not needing much for completion[v]Est. $3500-4500

It is also very noticeable that with the 19th and early 20th century considerable weight has been placed not only on obtaining good quality, but also periodically inserting this collector’s own pages specifically for errors, varieties, shades, fancy cancels, etc. These pages alone have substantial value. The collection itself goes well into the 2000s and all of it together makes a very satisfying viewing.
