GERMANY - D.D.R. (continued)

2001/

GERMANY - DDR i have the simplest of tastes" said Oscar Wilde "I like only the best". Here is a nearly complete collection mint of East Germany housed in a bulging Scott National album with the overwhelming majority mint never hinged, with no empty spaces. It was particularly pleasing to see the Karl Marx miniature sheets, perf and imperf, in extremely nice condition with no corner creases or faults as often is the case. There are all the good definitives of 1950/51 onwards mint never hinged. As usual very minor problems with the large series of 3 Chairman Mao commemoratives, it is mint never hinged although it could be argued that 2 of the values had a very slight color adhesion on the reverse, mentioned only for accuracy's sake only. That having been mentioned this is virtually perfection at your fingertipsEst. $750-1000

HUNGARY

2041

VALUABLE HUNGARY COLLECTION An important collection, mint and used, housed in 7 old fashioned albums with virtually everything conceivable in this country. The first book starts with the all the Franz Josefs with the different printings including the good 3kr green, followed by 19th century nearly complete. The collection continues through WWI again with the definitives and overprints complete through the 1920's and 1930's with the Zeppelins, and the Madonna and Child 10pengo, the propeller set mint and a very scarce stamp, far better than the catalog suggests, namely the 2fil on 8fil mauve definitive. The 1930's continues again with the airmails complete and no empty spaces, including seriously scarce imperfs and non-Scott listed material, as well as m/s etc. The notes written inside the first album states this catalogs over 20,000DM, yet without the year of the Michel catalog, this seems conservative. Album 2 similarly has a catalog of over 20,000DM with all the definitives, including of course the inflation o/ps, again with scarce material not often seen. More obvious better material includes the "four freedoms" FDR with all the different colors on the 4 m/s. Similarly the bridges pair and the "chainbreaker" m/s never hinged and again page after page completion with the scarce UPU 3ft perf and imperf, further imperf airmails, the very rare 60ft purple October 6th – 14th 1951, (printing 1060), and then the set of 3 of the same in green, red and blue as well as the imperfs of the basic series! Also seen on the same pages the scarce costumes imperf complete series of 8. Other good material includes the building definitives series imperf and lots of various other permutations, it is no surprise that this too has a 20,000DM catalog. The third volume has a catalog figure in excess of 6000DM, consisting again of everything conceivable from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. The fourth volume has a catalog figure of over 3000DM , the fifth volume with a catalog of over 4000DM, the sixth book about 4000DM, the seventh this time with a catalog figure of 12,000DM because of the imperf m/s, again many of which have very low printing numbers. The total catalog figure according to the collector comes to just over 69,000DM , something equivalent to $55,000 depending on what year he used his Michel catalog. In any event, this is a fantastic collection not needing much for completion, including the varieties. A great opportunity.[v]Est. $8500-10000

ITALIAN STATES

ITALIAN STATES COLLECTION In depth collection with many better stamps , also inductive postmark studies of Savoy. However the main value is in the regular issues with obviously good items such as Sicily in 1859 50gr ‘lacca bruno’ with certificate from Raybaudi, also accompanied by a lovely used 1/2gr yellow, 1gr grey olive, the 2gr, 5gr and 10gr all used, an impressive page. The next page also good with the high value for the Papal States this time with the highlight being the 50baj accompanied with a Mario Zanini certificate. The stamp itself has three large margins but is close on the right hand side, there are also eleven other stamps on the page, mostly four margin examples. Further studies including the 1867 and 1868 perforated issues. Then follows Tuscany with a good range of lions from the 18511q, various crazie, as well as soldo, followed by 1857s and the 1860 shields to 80cts, however the condition is mixed. The Romagna including some used all with signatures but needing, of course, certificates. This is followed by a study of Sardinia with postmarks such as Chamonix, Bonneville, Montmeillan, St Julien, Chambery etc. Also a good range of Parma from 1852 imperfs onwards, including some rather attractive cds strikes and various four margin copies including 1847/59 complete. Naples also strong with the obvious high value the 50gr four margined signed three times on the back, accompanied by Dr Enzo Diena certificate, with small faults. Also on that page other high values inc 10gr and 20gr, again not perfect, however the lower values are in nice condition. Other states include Modena with various ‘crown and eagle’ types. Catalogue value here is no doubt enormous but please take into consideration the condition which covers the gamut of states including Very Fine yet with the overwhelming majority in acceptable condition, often better than normally encountered. An excellent opportunity for a dealer to replenish stocks inexpensively or a collector looking for a collection that is more than a solid foundation to build on, with viewing much recommended to appreciate the extent of what is here[v]Est. $2500-3000

ITALIAN STATES COLLECTION a very impressive collection loaded with value, mostly used, in mixed condition as to be expected. However many of the better and more expensive stamps are in good condition, far more than some of the intermediate values, therefore a studied viewing is recommended. For example, the first page sets the pace with Naples with the 1858 imperfs to 20gr. Also stuck in between the first two pages was a packet with dozens of imperfs with an abundance of lower values that will delight the specialist, virtually everything in four margined condition, please inspect very carefully. Similarly good Sicily, with for example Ferdinand II the 20gr dark gray violet very fresh looking four margined original gum with partial paper adhesion on back, mentioned for accuracy’s sake only. Also seen Parma to 40ct of the provisional government mint, then interesting Sardinia with an attractive ‘Nizza Maritimo’ cancel on a violet rose imperf. Other good areas include Papal States with the Scott #10 50baj used, lots of Tuscany with ‘lions’ to 9 crazie and ‘coat of arms’ to 40ct etc. There is of course much more here among the hundreds of stamps that would benefit from further research and some re-organizing to incorporate into the main collection itself. Once this is done it will transform its value. Please study carefully page for page, stamp for stamp and appreciate the occasional excellent quality when you least expect it. Viewing is therefore highly recommended.Est. $2400-2800

VALUABLE ITALY COLLECTION a practically complete collection as per the five hingeless Lighthouse albums in which it is housed. A very good quality collection with hardly any empty spaces, mint and used, often with parallel mint and used, particularly with the latter part of the 20th century, page for page, through to 2005. Many of the classics are signed, with a discerning eye for quality virtually throughout, with many elusive 19th century stamps present. In the 20th century of course there are highlights such as Trieste o/ps complete, the Manzoni, the Grociera o/ps complete, the triptychs including the 1933 "Servizio di Stato" o/p, leading all the way through to the scarce 1000 lire parcel post mint with posthorns watermarks, followed by the good airmails with the pink Gronchi mint never hinged, also some Postal History, etc. A delightful collection to view, much recommended.[v]Est. $16000-20000

ITALY CHALLENGING COLLECTION when we first looked at this collection we thought it was good but not particularly remarkable. However when we opened up some of the packets that were stuck in-between the pages of this old fashioned album, we were pleasantly surprised. For example, apart from the Manzoni that was unused in the album itself, there were also two other examples of Scott #170, mint &: used. This accompanied by further better series of the 1920s and 1930s, for example the "300th aniv of the propagation of faith" and the ‘opera’ issue both scarce as used, as well as airmail centenaries again used and various other better commems, airmails that we displayed on a stockcard so that these treasures could be brought to light. As far as we could see all cancels were contemporaneous, nevertheless we valued everything as mint to be sure – specialists please note the distinct possibilities here of better material. Much of the value of this collection is in the 19th century and it was pleasing to see few empty spaces here as well, inc much non-Scott listed material, even in the early 20th century with dramatic definitive misperforations, printings on the gummed side etc. Of course various ovpts such as "Grociera Italiana 1924" and "B.L.P" etc adds value, as much as the better complete series on the 1930s through to the modern era, however there are lots of back of the book to explore here with distinct potential. There is also good 19th century and other items seen include good postage dues, advertising labels, zeppelins, inverted centre, servizios, etc. All in all a very good collection that needs just a little re-presentation, incorporating the packets onto the album pages and perhaps writing up the specialized material here that deserves recognition. A very useful and well rounded collection well worth the effort of further research. Viewing highly recommended allowing sufficient time.Est. $5000-6000

ITALIAN COLONIES

PHENOMENAL MINT ITALIAN COLONIES COLLECTION, loaded with certificates specifically for Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, Libya, as well as substantial Offices Abroad, Trieste and Fiume, etc. Outstanding exhibition collection, virtually all mint with considerable never hinged often in the better series, housed in 4 Marini albums. The collection is virtually complete for Eritrea, Italian Somaliland and Libya. It is extremely impressive as there are certificates everywhere for the expensive material. Eg. On Eritrea with Sassone #1, 3-6 and 8-11 mint with color photograph certificates for these 1893 defins from Raybaudi, similarly Sassone #19-29 mint, complete again with Raybaudi, also the same for the "Soggetti africani" commems Sassone #34-37 and the o/p defins for 1916 Sassone #38-40 this time with Enzo Diena. Subsequent series incl commems Sassone #129-131 with Raybaudi and then Sassone #136/137 key value defins with Caffaz Perito Filatelico. Then postage dues complete all with color photograph certificates. Just this book alone catalogs in Sassone 32,955euro. The next album is for Italian Somaliland, again accompanied by certificates for the key mint issues ie Sassone #67 with Perito color certificate, #69 with Raybaudi then a key value Sassone #230 the "Pittorica" 25lire with Carraro color certificate, also Sassone #213-228 and #230 with Sorani color photograph certificate, the parcel post Sassone #10-14 with Dr Diena certificates, as well as same for "Nodo di Savoia" Sassone #27-29 again with Raybaudi certificate etc inc #30-42 with Perito certificate, followed by the "non emessi" Sassone #43 and #44 with Raybaudi, furthermore the "fascio littorio" Sassone # 54-55c-56-57, #59-65 Raybaudi, similarly postage dues Sassone #19-22 and much more inc #24-32 all with certificate. This book has a catalog value of 30,366euro. Then Fiume only a few pages but again key material with a catalog value in Sassone of 6340euro followed by Trieste with a catalog value 3149euro. Then another good section, this time the Italian post offices abroad for places such as Oltre Giuba, Post offices in Constantinople, further "italiani all Estero" for the Levant i.e. Giannina/ Janina with color photograph certificates for key items such as Oltre Guiba Sassone #13-15 high value definitives from Perito, the good perf 13 3/4 Sassone #22, parcel posts #1-13 etc, post offices in Turkey with Sassone #2 etc, then Giannina with Sassone #1-8 again Perito - we have no hesitation in projecting a minimum catalog value of 10,000euro here. The total minimum catalog value of this magnificent collection is therefore over 120,000euro with the distinct possibility of being nearer to 130,000euro for items we couldn’t find or have time to catalog. At the time of going to press 125, 000euro is approximately $190,000. There is nothing but the best here, it is particularly pleasing to see that the highlights are accompanied by color photograph certificates. Everything of course is well displayed as one of a kind complete series for complete series, page after page in this specialized collection format. This is Italian colonies virtually complete for these countries and is one of the most delightful collections we have ever had the pleasure to auction, offered intact as received. JAPAN

2104

INCREDIBLE JAPAN DEALER'S STOCK 1880-1975 thousands of mint and used stamps arranged in catalog order in two large stockbooks. This is one of those old-fashioned stocks that every stamp dealer used to have in which the used stamps are arranged on the left side of the page and mint on the right side. The stock begins with mostly used stamps of the 1880 issue and continues with primarily used up to about 1920 when groups of mint start to appear in earnest and then grow in strength. Better mint sets and singles abound from the pre-WWII period and continue right through the early 1950s. For example, we noted mint 1921 Postal Service set (2), 1927 UPU set (2), 1936 Kwangtung Territories set, 1947 Athletic Meet blocks (3), 1948 Osaka Philatelic S/S (7), Beauty Looking Back (7), 1949 Radio Tower S/S, Moon &: Geese (6) 1950 Famous Men set (2), 1951 Kannon S/S (2) as well as a good selection of the National Parks sets of the period. The second volume is mostly newer issues from about 1950 to 1975, though there is also a section of Airmail issues which include 1950 Pheasant set. A fabulous stock with much NH material that is seldom offered in today's market.[v]Est. $7000-10000

JAPAN WWI PRISONER OF WAR COLLECTION OF POSTAL HISTORY WITH COLLATERAL MATERIAL most unusual collectors collection of this highly desirable material, not often seen on the market today, especially in collection format. One of the most fascinating items is the soccer game postcard, postally used, specifically for Prisoners of War for the second ‘sportwoche’, namely the sport week held in the fall of 1919 at Kurume for the German POWs. Other good items includes correspondence not only sent to Germany, also POW writing to contacts in Tientsin, China. Other great items include 1916 censor covers originating from the camps in Japan, with receiving endorsements such as ‘Unter Kriegsrecht gepruft und freigegeben’ and ‘Uberwachungstelle VIII. Armeekorps Coln-Deutz’, lots of other marking including mail originating from Camp Bando with the different types, also Osake with Nagoya Castle imperial palace illustration, also present Camp Narashino to the Red Cross in Cologne, plus correspondence to Japan with violet 2 lines and magenta 2 lines strike, making most impressive postal history, various kinds of other markings and chops present including different seals, red oval strikes written in French and Japanese, violet concentric circle ‘gepruefts’ etc etc. Also a card of an German soldier, POW, smoking his pipe overlooking the Japanese mountains with the banner ‘Oster Gruss’ from Ninoschma. All in all there are 17 items of postal history mostly extensively written up and researched, as well as original photographs, certificates of participation in the sports, the programmes for such events written up of course in German and other interesting collateral material. The more this collection is looked at and studied the more absorbing it becomes. Nearly every POW item here would sell for a few hundred dollars each and in collection format, represents an extraordinary opportunity to buy.[v]Est. $3000-4000

JAPAN LARGE POSTAL HISTORY HOLDING FROM THE 1950'S AND LATER thousands of covers housed in 8 boxes, each box chronologically ordered from 1957 onwards (with very little out of order). This is definitely well-suited for retail or internet selling - although virtually nothing is priced, there is easy access month by month, year by year throughout. The key being that there are many different cachets/illustrations, including scarce ones for commems, definitives as well as miniature sheets. It is difficult to get the precise figure of how many thousands of covers are here, but this is almost secondary to the diversity and scope of nearly every issue, including se-tenants present as well. There are also of course fancy cancels specific to the FDCs of which this lot is in abundance. Also seen occasional multiples on cover, not to forget the many themes that Japan has issued over these decades representing virtually every topic imaginable, useful as another avenue for selling this huge selection of material. The other important feature of this is that nothing is in excess quantity - often the case in 'wholesale' lots - here perhaps a half a dozen cachets it would not be particularly regarded as duplication. A real opportunity for a dealer looking to profit by making a market from an almost ‘turn-key’ stock of modern Japanese postal history with considerable specialization of each issue would be a high number and even then, because of the different.[v]Est. $2500-3000

JAPAN COLLECTION half a dozen albums loaded with mint material. Four of the albums are White Ace and primarily concentrate on commemoratives. Then there are two green Scott National albums again with nothing but mint with useful sheetlets, where this collector has bought the commoratives in that format and placed them on the album pages. Fortunately all of these fit neatly into the Scott National albums and he has done a good job in getting one of a kind of these, mostly in the 1950s and 60s, rather like miniature sheets of 20. The Scott Nationals also include premium miniature sheets i.e. National Parks, temples as well as other commems such as personalities, icons, etc. One of the Scott Nationals is absolutely loaded with material with much premium, the other Scott album tends to be non-premium from the 1960s and 70s.The White Ace albums do have occasionally better including duplicates from the Scott National albums i.e. National Parks etc, also seen mint defins from 1899 onwards inc useful coils and other later defins, also various athletic commems etc. These White Ace albums go up to the 1980s . In sum, a substantial holding of primarily 20th century with much in complete series with lots of premium. Please inspect carefully.Est. $2000-3000

LITHUANIIA

2131

ATTRACTIVE LITHUANIA COLLECTION mint and used, housed on old fashioned album leaves, starting of with the 1919 Kaunas through to the ‘white knight’ definitives and few empty spaces thereafter includes commems , definitives as well as airmails. Some of the overprints on the 1922 issues are well worth researching. Some of the more obvious series present such as Scott #176 to #188 Memel Harbor complete, Followed by more overprints of the 1926 types in gold and silver, including both used in complete series. Again no empty spaces from 1927 onwards through to the 1930s including the Grand Duke Vytautas complete i.e. Scott #242 to #255. Also present various imperf issues in complete series, occasionally accompanying the perforated issues of the same complete, as well as general issues through to 1940. Hundreds of stamps here, a delightful collection to view.[v]Est. $1000-1400
2132

LITHUANIA STOCK A very interesting stock with much useful and elusive items, not just from the 1918/1919 first issues but also the 1920s through to 1930s, with particular interest in the definitives, ie from the oval frames separate and conjoined, through to the early definitives of the 1920s with better cent/centu and auksinia overprints, leading up to the more obvious better material from the 1920s to the 1930s, on to miniature sheets of 1938 and a little postal history as well. There are many hundreds of stamps here, mint and used, often with ‘key’ values present, especially on the definitives. There is little if any duplication but much distinctly specialized material on these early overprints. Careful inspection will reveal much discoveries and of course the earlier material way under valued in Scott, particularly with some varieties non-Scott listed material present. Tremendous opportunity here for the specialist, a very enjoyable and challenging lot to go through[v]Est. $600-900

MEXICAN REVENUES HOLDING thousands of these issues, in all kinds of shapes and sizes, with much from the 19th century. Housed in hundreds of glassines, this exciting holding will whet the appetite of specialists in this still unfolding area of Mexican revenue philately . Some of the more interesting issues are for the 19th century, for example "Documentary Tax" with some very attractive engravings and various different denominations, as well as long rectangulars for "Arbitrio Municipal", also "Contribucion Federal" and "Timbre Mexico, Documentos Y Libro" and much more. Another interesting part are the various kinds of overprints here to investigate with. The key for understanding why this accumulation has tremendous potential is its source. Its originates from an old time packet dealers stock that hasn’t seen the light of day for several decades. If you are looking for a crusty dusty work lot of Mexican Revenues, then look no further. An excellent opportunity for research, especially if you can purchase within our valuation rangeEst. $1000-2000

The earliest two items are Folded Letters from 1858 and 1874. These are followed by several postal cards from the 1890s to early 1910s. We noted several covers from 1913 Civil War period through the "Corbata" overprints of 1916 including one cover franked by a Pair #519 with Inverted Overprints. Also in this group we spotted an intriguing cover franked by #315 and 366 addressed to Bergen Norway. Among the picture postcards we noted several depicting interesting street scenes such as a Horse Drawn Street Car in old Matamoras, "Main Street" in old Tijuana as nothing more than a large expanse of dirt as well as some Street Vendors. Finally, we spotted three Flight covers from 1928 to 1937. Although only a small group, there are several very desirable items.[v]Est. $500-750

PARAGUAY

2179

PARAGUAY COLLECTION it is always good to see an excellent collection of Paraguay. This much maligned philatelic country is finally getting the appreciation it richly deserves, as a good number of these issues exist only in the low 1000s, especially for the classics. This collection is housed on Scott album leaves, mint and used, with few empty spaces. Furthermore this collector has gone out of his way to find errors, varieties, shades, imperfs between, imperfs pairs, inverted overprints, etc in an abundance of forms and has placed them in inserted pages, relevant to their respective time periods. Completely uncatalogued, this will be a satisfying and enjoyable lot to view for the aficionados of this country. It is virtually complete, with most pages replete, and therefore makes for a recommended viewing, especially for the back of the book and non-Scott listed.Est. $1800-2200

PERU

2180

POWERFUL PERU COLLECTION an astonishing collection with certificates housed in a Scott album, mint and used. There is much here of merit and very few empty spaces and certificates where it matters. For example some of the better items with certificates seen in this nearly complete album include the "coat of arms" four margined imperforate superb used Scott #6 1/2 peso buff accompanied by Scott #7 1d slate blue with cds cancel. Similarly the Llama Scott #20 large margin imperforate, as well as #41 the very scarce 50c green with red overprint for the 1881 UPUs used (philatelic foundation), also seen Scott #77 the 50c counterpart with triangle o/p added again excellent used, even Scott #99 with the horseshoe o/p 50ct rose mint, etc. The 20th century with a very rare stamp, far scarcer than the Scott retail price suggests the San Martin Scott #222a with center inverted never hinged (Scott retail $375), as well as the 1925 2c on 20c blue type "a" surcharge in red Scott #251, even scarcer than the center inverted yet only with a Scott retail of $350, both these stamps exist in the hundreds only. Other areas include interesting Peru under Chilean occupation, provisional issues from regions such as Ayacucho, Chicliyo, Chala, Cuzco, Huacho, Moquegua, Paita, Pasco, Prura, Puno and Yca, etc. Viewing is highly recommended with much more here in a very well filled album, requiring not that much for completion[v]Est. $5000-6000
