![]() ![]() ![]() | WORLWIDE SAFETY DEPOSIT HOLDING a powerful holding representing purchases made since 1990 of good material, not by any means all collections, rather it is often individual items and probably the most intriguing of all, stockcards of better items that has been pulled out of numerous better collections bought over the years privately and in auction. We felt it was better to offer the entire contents of this safety deposit as one lot, intact as received. This is partly due to time considerations and and as importantly the nature of the accumulation -there is an immense amount of work here and much material that would benefit from certificates and careful research with many different foreign catalogs. Furthermore many of these good items are crammed on top of each other and require careful viewing to see the huge potential here. We have no doubt there will be many dozens of good discoveries here, that so much is clear from a very quick inspection. However there will also be, particularly on the 19th century classics repairs and reference copies. This is a very exciting lot and we recommend you allow a few hours to appreciate the depth of what is here. The person who buys this will be the viewer that has taken the trouble to really look at it properly. It is whole world with particular strength in Europe, also the postal history is excellent too, with some very good items throughout. Ideal for an auction house looking for photograph material. Our valuation is a no brainer and viewing highly recommended | Est. $20000-25000 |

![]() ![]() | WORLDWIDE SCOTT INTERNATIONAL COLLECTION filling 22 albums in four large cartons. Actually, the owner seems to have started one collection in the early 1960s since much of the value is concentrated in about eight albums which are just chock-full of late George VI and early Elizabeth mint sets along with similar material from other countries of the same period. The other albums appear to have been acquired at a different time and are complementary to the main collection since these albums contain earlier material and a lot of CTO Eastern Europe with a heavy emphasis on Russia which is spread through three albums along with Poland, Romania and to a lesser extent Czechoslovakia. Returning to the main collection, we were impressed by the sheer number of sets valued at $100 and up without even mentioning the wealth of material in the $25 to $50 range and the vast majority of these appear to be NH in mounts. In fact, the list of better sets is too long to mention every one, however, these include the first Elizabeth sets from Gambia, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaya-Kedah &: Pahang, Mauritius, New Hebrides, New Zealand, Rhodesia &: Nyasaland, St Helena, Sarawak, and Turks &: Caicos. Valuable sets from other countries include the Iceland 1944 Sigurdsson set, Italy 1933 Zeppelin set, 1957 Luxembourg Europa set, Madagascar 1948 Airmail for French Antarctic, Poland-General Government 1940 Definitive set (2), Portugal 1945 President Carmona set &: 1946 Castles set, Surinam 1945 Queen Wilhelmina set, Switzerland 1945 Societe des Nations set. This is one of those collections that should be on every viewer's "must see" list. | Est. $10000-15000 |

![]() ![]() | WORLDWIDE MASTER GLOBAL COLLECTION in 25 volumes, actually one man's love affair with Minkus Master Global albums since there seems to be at least three different collections. The main collection was arranged alphabetically while the other two are still in year order and obviously there is duplication among them because we found duplicate Vatican City distributed among several volumes along with duplication of other countries such as South Africa and SW Africa. In fact, the owner seemed to focus on just a couple of areas, namely British Commonwealth, Western &: Eastern Europe and Latin America. One entire volume consists almost exclusively of CTO Poland, Romania and especially Russia. Although most of the material is inexpensive, we did note a number of better mint items such as France 1953 Sports set, Germany 1950/1955 Famous people sets (lightly stuck), Macao 1953 Flower set, and Thailand 1951 5B &: 10B King Bhumibol high values along with a number of British Commonwealth George V better values &: George VI sets. The one consistency of all the albums is the concentration of British Commonwealth issues with strength in several colonies such as Grenada, South Africa, Trinidad &: Tobago, and Tristan da Cunha along with many others. The profit potential is obvious when the sheer number of stamps is considered which is probably in the neighborhood of 40 to 50,000. A bourse dealer who offers these collections one volume at time will certainly come out ahead of the game. | Est. $8000-12000 |

![]() ![]() ![]() | GARGANTUAN WORLDWIDE HOLDING A collector's decades-long passion for stamps has produced this gasp-inducing, globe-embracing, mixed hoard of hundreds of thousands of 19th-20th Century stamps to 1970s//1990s comprising a dizzying array of Definitives, Commemoratives, S/Ss, Semi-Postals, Airmails, Postage Dues, Special Delivery, Officials, etc., housed in varying quantities in glassines by issue (most identified by Scott), in envelopes by country, on loose album pages, and accompanied by still more stamps in 19 homemade and (some rather worn) commercial albums, 9 stockbooks, and 13 Scott International albums in good condition (2 well-filled; the rest empty to practically so), and an empty Minkus Global album; plus hundreds of covers; even 30+ kilos of kiloware (mostly Canada, USA); Scott values apparently range from modest to $10+ throughout; the unbelievable amounts of stamps in the glassines, the content of which reaches back to the 19th Century, contain duplicates up to the 100s, in many cases; for example, we espied used Canada 1873 3c (x1000+) separated by cancel type, 1897 1c Jubilee (x100+), 1898 2c Imperial Penny Post (x50+), and many other countries offer the same quantities and value; covers comprise postally used private and commercial mail, WW II censored mail, FDCs, PPCs, a 1936 Hindenburg Europe North America Flight cover, an Australia-England First Flight cover, and more; condition of 19th Century stamps is typically mixed, with later issues being generally Fine-VF, and the mint stamps (incl. a mint NH Malaria topical collection) are fresh and plentiful; a clean lot, offered intact and largely unchecked, so there is great potential for finding scarce stamps, cancels, printing varieties, and more, to say nothing of the great profitable opportunities within; Careful viewing of this thrilling trove is a must ! | Est. $7500-10000 |
![]() ![]() | WORLDWIDE ACCUMULATION a last minute and near last second entry that deserves a thorough good viewing, way beyond the remit of this description which is at best outline, as time permits. When we saw this coming in we would have preferred to split this into 4 or 5 lots for our Fall sale, however the vendor has chosen to put this in June and as such it must be offered as one large lot. Better items seen include Switzerland with a collection from 19th cent onwards from the imperf Strubeli issues of 1854, through ĪSitzende Helvetiasā and ĪStehende Helvetiasā with various perforation studies etc, on to the 20th century which is virtually all mint with several dozen complete series, especially the post 1920s. Accompanying this collection is another Swiss, housed in a Lighthouse album which has some 19th century yet primarily has the value in the 20th cent, this time used, with again dozens of series all different with back of the book etc. Then some very good Danzig with lots of colorful series as well as strong inflation, m/s from the 1930s etc, similarly Memel, Saar, WWI and WWII Occupation with much material that deserves a Michel to see the depth present. Another good section is the Italy, tens of thousands of stamps crammed from the 19th cent onwards, not at all displayed to best advantage but lots of material here with nothing in excessive quantity. It is very diverse yet overall fortunately chronologically organised, the same goes for the post offices abroad, Italian States, Trieste and Italian area in general, accompanying this is also a very strong collection of Italy, housed in a Lindner album, paralell mint and used and between the two of them virtually complete from 1945 onwards. Also present postal history and topicals from a very broad base of countries, including more obvious such as Sweden with a strong representation of the theme of Nobel Prize winners with much postal history on this theme. Another exciting part with nearly a hundred thick envelopes is a new issue service, loaded with material. We have not had the time to go through this but it is approximately 1 ø feet high! Strength from a quick review of a few of the new issue received is in central Europe, Germany, Isle of Man and Channel Islands etc. There is also a strong collection on Czechoslovakia, again housed in a Lindner album, starting of with a very good range of castle issues from 1918/1919 leading onto the ĪPosta Ceskoslovenska 1919ā o/ps, incuding the scarce black o/p on 1kr carmine, with multiple signatures. Also seen good airmails seen perf and imperf of 1920 and 1921 complete, as well as the 1925 Olympic Congress and the Sokol o/ps complete etc through to virtual completion post 1930s onwards, as well as back of the book. Yet another good section is some very interesting Liechtenstein, no doubt with a retail potential running into five figures methodically organised, mint and used, by Scott number with nothing in excessive quantity and definitely plenty of good series here. Another good section is the Vatican with at least 6 albums including better m/s etc. Then some vintage bundleware with man, many thousands of items filling up 3 boxes from the 19th century onwards, with the very best by far being the Sudan with top values to 50 piastres by the hundreds, let alone the huge postmark interest potential here. Considerable time is reuired to inspect this interesting array. | Est. $7000-10000 |

![]() ![]() | COLLECTOR'S SPRING CLEANING the wife issued an ultimatum, "Either the stamps get cleaned out of the closet or ELSE!" The "or else" was the less attractive alternative so, now, you have an opportunity to take advantage of this unfortunate collector's dilemma. The closet contained a real hoard of philatelic "treasure" that fills about 12 large cartons. The first 10 cartons are exclusively covers of every description, there must be at least 10-15,000 covers altogether including many hundreds if not thousands of United States FDCs that are mostly the more common cachets, though there is a smattering of better cachets, also includes foreign FDCs, flight and event covers, lots of commercial mail and much more. A quick glance revealed a number of items in the $10 to $25 range. The last five cartons contain the stamps. Two of these cartons contain a United States mish-mash in albums and stockbooks such as a Minkus All American, a Scott Specialty album, an old mint sheet file, loose glassines &: album pages with year sets and gobs of postage. The last three cartons are packed with worldwide stamps sorted into glassines &: plastic bags with a small box of used United States. Let's just hope that your wife doesn't notice that the linen closet is now filled with stamps! | Est. $6000-8000 |
![]() ![]() ![]() | MYSTERY LOT It was a dark and stormy night and the electricity was on the fritz. Upon entering the room, the only illumination was the lightning flashes which first revealed a mountain of about 11 cartons filled with covers of every description. In that one flash, the detective discerned at least 10-15,000 covers. Then by candlelight he examined these to discover thousands of United States and foreign FDCs, flight covers and commercial mail. He easily imagined that some of these could be in the $10 to $25 range. Another lightning flash exposed another five cartons on the other side of the room and then an eerie darkness descended as the candle sputtered out. The detective whipped out his trusty Zippo lighter to examine these boxes. With magnifying glass in hand, he spied three small boxes of loose glassines containing world wide new issues, especially booklets from Great Britain, Channel Islands &: Sweden followed by a pile of Canada face value issues. He tripped over the last three cartons containing albums and stockbooks containing modest British Commonwealth collections of South Africa, SW Africa, Channel Islands, Ghana and recent Russia along with two volumes of old Scott International albums, an old Minkus and Harris albums. That was all the evidence the detective needed to suddenly realize that a crime against philately had been committed! The only question that remained was "Whodunit?" | Est. $6000-8000 |
![]() ![]() ![]() | PHILATELIC ARMCHAIR TRAVELLER It is a philatelic challenge! Granted, it's not the same as conquering Mt Everest, swimming the English Channel or sailing up the Amazon River, however, even an inveterate couch potato can undertake this adventure. Just grab your handy guidebook or stamp catalog, a pair of tongs, a magnifying glass &: your favorite intoxicating beverage and you have everything you need to travel the world. The first stop on your journey is the "Mountain of Covers" in the form of about 10 cartons filled with perhaps 10-15,000 covers including hundreds if not thousands of United States FDCs, foreign FDCs, flight and event covers, and enough commercial mail to stop a train. The next leg of the journey includes an overnight stay in Israel (in the form of two White Ace albums &: a Lighthouse album), a quick tour of Asia with a small box featuring a smattering of China in small stockbooks, with some Hong Kong and Singapore, then relax for a few days of touring Europe in the form of stockbooks of used France, Belgium and Spain followed by a whirlwind trip through South America in a Scott Specialty album of used stamps, a box lunch is included in the form of a small box of mostly new issues that is well worth the effort, and wind up your travels with a well deserved stop in two cartons of albums and stockbooks containing an old Scott International part I &: an old Regency album. And don't forget your passport! | Est. $6000-8000 |
![]() ![]() | PHILATELIC AVALANCHE perhaps you read the story in your local newspaper about the woman who was married to a stamp collector. She had not seen her husband for several days and remembered that he had last been seen in his stamp room. When she tried to open the door it would not budge. The firemen were called and broke through the door with axes to find their way blocked by more than a dozen crates of stamps and covers &: sure enough beneath the pile they found the collector still alive but in desperate need of shot of whiskey. The fire marshall ordered the avalanche removed and now you have an opportunity to dig through this material. We noticed about nine cartons of covers containing mostly United States FDCs, some foreign FDCs, lots of commercial mail and even a few items in the $10 to $25 range, altogether there must be at least 10-15,000 covers. We also noticed one carton of just United Nations including several albums, stockbooks and new issues still in their original envelopes. Another carton is filled with albums and stockbooks with emphasis on recent mint and used Germany, a stockbook of used Spain and a Scott International Part II, the next carton seems to be filled with albums &: stockbooks of recent British commonwealth material and lastly a carton of loose stamps sorted into glassines and small plastic bags. Some of the countries represented here, chosen at random are Hungary, Liberia, Bolivia, Mauritius, Austria, Romania, St Helena, France, Gambia, St Vincent, San Marino, Zambia, South Arabia, French Somalia, Greece, South Africa, Poland, Pitcairn Island, Philippines, Colombia, Chile, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Chad and many other French Colonies, Montenegro, Mozambique Company, and various Portuguese Colonies, Malta, Gibraltar, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Senegal, Seychelles, Great Britain, to name but a few! The retail value potential here of course runs into 1000s of dollars, however on our brief overview no expensive items were seen. Similarly there are well over a dozen books with Argentina, Austria, Argentina, Canada etc. There is also a selection of large manila envelopes with one country collections, such as Belgium, Cook Islands, Chile, Romania, Seychelles, Spain, Labuan, Lagos etc. There are about 3 dozen of these with a few priced, with the high point being a collection of Turkey with 'bob' (over) priced at $375 and at the other end of the spectrum at $15. There is also three old blue Scott International albums with thousands of stamps mint and used, with much of 19th and early 20th century through to WWII. A large worldwide lot with huge potential best for a broad based market, probably destined for shows or approval circuits. Ideal for those looking for a very diverse worldwide generalist material with some but not too much work needed. Viewing highly recommended | Est. $5000-7000 |
![]() ![]() | WORLDWIDE HOLDING, STRONG IN WESTERN EUROPE an extraordinary holding built over many years by a Īwanabeeā dealer who bought mostly in auction and then proceeded to strip these collections into stockbooks! This was done over so many years from the 1960s onwards that the stockbooks got out of control. Also he made an inventory every year as well right up to 1995, using a foreign catalog, virtually everything by Michel. The range is from the 19th century to the 1990s and in the accumulation for virtually everything is chronologically organized. Furthermore from the quick cross referencing we have made the catalog figures as individualized in front of each album, in Deutsche Marks, seem to be less than todayās Scott Retail equivalent in dollars. There is mint occasionally among the modern yet the overwhelming majority is used. The post WWII often has attractive Īsock on the noseā cancelsā. The classics through to 1945 for the most part also have particularly attractive postmarks and certainly overall are of far better quality and caliber than normally encountered. Starting with the first book of Sweden has a listed value of 5605DM from the ore issues through to se-tenant and m/s in the modern. The next ones are Austria housed in 3 thick volumes with the first from the early kreuzer issues onwards through to the 1950s, also including non Scott listed and Īback of the bookā revenues and have a total 1995 cat of 4197DM - the second and third books, ie the modern era have 3305DM and 5066DM respectively. Then the Germany starting off with the Occ WWI with 4629DM with lots of useful ovpts WWI and WWII also Allied Occ and officials with a total of 10,391DM followed by inflation period very impressive with a figure of 35,544DM however we cannot attach too much confidence to this figures as some of the cancels may not be of the time. Then West German with 4,637DM, and the earlier period the transition from 1947 to the early 1950s, certainly a better book with lots of useful series posthorns onwards with a 16,433DM total, plus another Bund for the latter issues day for 3,320DM. Belgium and Netherlands with a figure total of 3129DM in a very large book and here this figure looks conservative and probably should be more. France probably the book with more mixed condition in the classics than the other 19th century of Western Europe, nevertheless interesting with lots of value in the 20th century totalling 8286DM. Similarly Finland with some Īzig-zagsā as usual mixed condition through to the modern era with 4790DM with some attractive mint m/s etc. Also in the same volume Norway with a similar pattern with 5252DM, as well as Denmark from skilling issues coat of arms onwards through to modern mint face value, again with Īback of the bookā with a total 3467DM, followed by Greece with some interesting Olympic Games second series high values ie the 2, 3 and 5drachma plus small and large hermes heads to catagorize and much more with a probable low figure of 1406DM and Ireland from the o/ps KGV onwards with 3727DM. There are also 2 further substantial books of Berlin again with 1000s of complete series, as well as better values from the late 1940s early 1950s yet both without papers and almost certainly run over 10,000DM+++. Further books of interest and again without figures incl Gibraltar, Israel and Monaco and Turkey and Cyprus, with lots of attractive modern series of high topical interest but without any papers with a substantial catalog figure. Then 2 Europa books book - with figures of 6819DM, and 2750DM respectively, Australia with kangaroos onwards through to Cocos (Keeling) Islands with a 2120DM figure and various other books that total to well over 20,000DM making a grand total of over 2 dozen books. The total catalog figure by 1994 Michel comes to over 130,000DM without considering the inflation book at 35,544DM and a few other volumes that are uncatalogued. If that overall figure is reduced then 25% simply because of the uncertainty of the relationship between Michel 1994 and Scott retail 2008, it will in any event will be the equivalent of at least $75,000 Scott retail, probably nearer to $100,000 when finally processed. Viewing recommended. | Est. $5000-7000 |
![]() ![]() | WORLDWIDE ACCUMULATION filling three large cartons. The first carton contains collections of Canada and France with very small Netherlands and Israel collections while the last two cartons contain a stock of mostly used France and Great Britain sorted into glassines in catalog order. Most of the value is concentrated in the Canada collection which is housed in two albums with some duplication between them. The first of these Canada albums starts with early used issues including the first stamp followed by the 1859 issue complete used plus several shades. The Large &: Small Queens are well represented then beginning with the øc Jubilee, the collection becomes primarily mint and continues with the 20c Quebec Tercentenary, Admirals to the 50c including the 10c Plum followed by several better George V sets such as the 1928 Scroll issue including the 50c Bluenose, 1930 Arch issue and 1938 issue are both complete. The George VI issues include 1938 Pictorial and 1942 War set complete. Turning to the France collection, we find that altough there are a few early issues, value is concentrated in mint 20th century especially from the 1930s starting with the 1926 10F Merson, 1938 High Value Definitives and 1941 Surcharged set then continuing into the 1950s with real value among the Semi-postals of the period which are generally NH. The used stock of France and Great Britain both start with 19th century issues and continue through the late 1990s. We spotted significant value in the British stock which contains many Penny Reds sorted by Plate number, a fair number of Surface Printed issues, the 5/ &: 10/ Victoria of 1884, many 2/6 and 5/ Seahorses of the 1913 &: 1915 issue plus a complete set of 1934 Seahorses and the 1948 £ Silver Wedding (5), then continuing through modern issues. In summary, value is to be found throughout all three cartons. | Est. $5000-7500 |
