CUBA UNDER SPANISH ADMINISTRATION attractive original mint collection of these tough to find issues. Many of these are in our opinion much undervalued in Scott. An old time collection on quadrille album leaves for the Spanish administration has a very good range from 1873 with values to one peseta, followed by 1874 ‘liberty’ allegory to 1p. Shield types to 1p (unused), then the ultramar king issues to 1p Black, 1877 to 1p, 1878 complete to 1p, 1879 to 1p (lacks the 10c). Further impressive material with the 1880 types with no less than 24 values, followed by the fancy o/ps leading on to the ‘impresos’. Then the young king issues with a plethora of values which, like most of this collection, has excellent colors hardly. The collection culminates with the end of the Spanish administration period, leading on to American administration. A nice collection, most unusual to see classics in such good condition.[v]Est. $650-800

CZECHOSLOVAKIA - BOHEMIA & MORAVIA

1817

BOHEMIA &: MORAVIA COLLECTION Three volumes including stamps &: Postal History, one man’s collection A lifetime collection with considerable specialization, copiously written up with extensive postal history which is probably the better part as there are good items present that we have not seen before. The collection itself is housed in 3 very impressive old fashioned albums, starting off with an interesting range of forerunners, ie the transition period from Czechoslovakia to the Protectorate, with many desirable covers, including combination Czech and Bohemia, also seen combination with the first series o/ps used again with the Czech. The first 1939 Bohemia o/ps are of course here complete, with the same on cover and the higher values on separate covers. Then follows a further extensive study of the 1939 second definitives, including inter- panneaus on cover and not often seen as such. Then follows further research into the next definitive series, including ‘Leerfeld’ and much wing marginal, corner marginal, asterisks and the like -this is incredibly specialized. The third volume continues in the same way, including advertising/Red Cross labels/se-tenants, sheet errors and a remarkable range of back of the book, postage dues etc with much on cover often better commercial usage. Collections of this depth are not often seen today of this side of the Atlantic. This is an opportunity to buy one mans collection with considerable potential for the specialist, much more here than described. Please inspect.Est. $2000-2500

FRANCE - ALSACE & LORRAINE

1865

ALSACE-LORRAINE FRANCO PRUSSIAN WAR COLLECTION WITH IMPORTANT POSTAL HISTORY INCLUDING RARE COMBINATION ITEMS a well written-up collection of 60 covers or fronts and 150 stamps, plus forgeries and reference material, housed on quadrille album leaves, with much detail and research representing a lifetime's collecting of the area. Among the highlights are the seven combination covers or fronts, resulting from the system of double taxation for the different zones of free and occupation areas of France. For example, combination Alsace and France with Ceres heads and the numeral issues, virtually all the 20c Ceres with either 2x10c or 1x20c Alsace Lorraine. As importantly, combination covers emanating from Germany - that is to say then, Strasbourg in the Alsace - sent into France with shields of 1872 accompanied by this time the 25c Ceres, with lozenge cancels. The shields would be either the 2 gr blue or 2x1gr red - the latter sent to Nancy, accompanied by Dr: Diena certificate. Also seen another good combination with blue horseshoe cancel on 2gr blue shield with 25c Ceres in Mulhausen sent to Finistere in France. Also correspondence going into Lorraine from France and the inevitable letters to France mailed from German occupied French Territory from in the early 1870s with mourning letters etc, as well as yet more impressive horseshoe cancel covers. Then further good postal history, specifically for the numeral issues for the Alsace-Lorraine, beginning with a rather beat up strip of 3x 4c and single as well as damaged 2c making the 18cts rate directly from the fieldpost to England, full of character. Another important section with over 40 further covers, various denominations from the 5c to the 25c, with multiples, different denominations combined, as well as equally scarce single usage -lots of interesting items here for the specialist to enjoy. Then the stamp collection itself, somewhat mixed condition in parts, well written-up with the 1,2,4,5,10,20 and 25c mint different points upright and inverted. Also a range of used with dozens of stamps here, including extensive studies of the Hamburg and Paris reprints, as well as examples of the Geneva and Brussels forgeries- yet again well described on the album pages with much information how to distinguish the different types. Also seen further collateral material such as articles, maps, as well as reference and genuine stamps etc. The latter section is somewhat chaotically presented with much waiting to be incorporated into the main collection, this was the original intention of the collector in his working sheets. An absorbing extraordinary collection with most of the value, in our opinion in the postal history, with many covers that would make very good individual auction lots in their own right. This is a fantastic opportunity to further expand what is already a very important collection, not often seen today with such depth[v]Est. $5000-7500

FRANCE - OFFICES IN ZANZIBAR

1872

FRANCE - OFFICES IN ZANZIBAR COLLECTION an important collection of stamps and postal history collection, exhibition standard (also some British). Fabulous collection, as formed by the Schulze family that once lived in Zanzibar during the 19th and 20th centuries. Original collections of this nature hardly ever come on the market and besides Zanzibar, particularly late 19th and early 20th century is now one of the most popular areas in philately. Some of the numbers extant here, especially in French post offices in Zanzibar run in to hundreds or even less, far scarcer than Scott retail suggests. Broadly this collection mint and used is virtually complete except for four of the five 1897 ‘Poste France’ o/ps and a handful of world rarities. Starting off with 1894/1896 o/ps Scott #1 to #11 complete used with color variations as well as side by side the normal for comparison purposes, to #11s with distinct shades of red lilac, also present the annas for anna o/p error. This is followed by the same set again complete mint and the annas o/p error as well. Then the 1894 o/ps with many good values present probably the highlight being the #16, 10a and 1 fr on 40cts mint as well as #12, #13 and #15 mint and a attractively used #14 the 2 1/2 annas and 25cts on 4cts. Then follows the 1897 2 1/2 annas and 25cts on 5cts green (Scott #29) nicely used on piece, as well as the 2 1/2 annas and 25cts on 1 anna and 10cts mint, (Scott #30), cat $3250. also present the 1902/1903 Merson series complete and further studies of the annas and Zanzibar o/ps combined mint and used complete with specialisation, leading on to the 1904 overprints with Scott #50 superb used cat $750 and Scott #51 superb used cat $850, plus Scott #54 cat $1500 attractively used on piece yet without expertisation on reverse which other stamps of the late 19th / early 20th century here occasionally do have. However in an collection of this nature, methodically collected over the decades by a family that was actually once based in Zanzibar, it is likely that virtually everything here is authentic. This also holds for the postage dues of 1897 and of course the postal history. There are in this section about 30 French post office in Zanzibar covers and over a dozen British post offices in Zanzibar covers with much from the 19th and early 20th century, including postal stationery. Probably the best here are the 19th century registered, ‘peace and commerce’ types o/ps as well as French stamps used in Zanzibar, ie 1904 Hintzmann and Company advertising cover with the sower definitive types of France strip of 3 x 25 cents to make the 75 cents, registered to Frankfurt. Also in the British post offices there are apart from the registered, some interesting newspaper wrappers, p/cards, specimens etc. A good number of these covers especially the French, would clearly be worth hundreds of dollars each and is an integral part of the value. Further seen a useful range of ‘insufficiently prepaid postage dues’ and modern through to the Jamhuri o/ps in further postage dues with this o/p, as well as a solid range of definitives, commems etc. This is a collection you could look at for hours on end and still be absorbed with the contents. Original collections of Zanzibar are hardly ever available on the market today. This represents an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for elusive material of the stamps and postal history from Zanzibar, as reflected through the French (and British) post offices in the Sultanate.[v]Est. $8000-10000

FRENCH GUIANA

1906

EXCELLENT FRENCH GUIANA COLLECTION for those looking for a quality collection including many elusive stamps from this country, go no further. While lacking the great rarities it does have many important stamps. Everything is housed on Scott album leaves and starts in 1886 with the 5ct on 10c brown surcharge excellent used #2 (cat $450). Then the imperfs, all four margined of the 1887 issues with the 20c on 30c unused, 5c on 2c unused, 20c on 35c unused and the 25 on 30ct again excellent used, probably being the right hand corner marginal from the sheet, i.e. Scott #4,5,6 and 7. Then Scott #8 this time the 5c on 30c, followed by Scott # 10 for the 1888 surcharge and the very next stamp of course the scarce stamp # 11 with original gum, wing marginal the 10c on 75c carmine. Then further imperfs on 1892 with some very tough to find stamps, especially the 2c green 'peace and commerce' with four generous margins #12 (cat $600) with original gum and signed twice, as well as a Brun 'Certifiact d'Expertise', then the 40c, 75c and Ifr of the same, all four margins i.e. Scott #15, 16 and 17. This is then followed by the perforated issues of the 'peace and commerce' types 18-30 complete mint, save the 20c and 25c cds used, with the 75c signed 3 times and the lfr also signed on reverse - it should be noted that the 75c is the 'broken G' variety on Guiana. Also present is the inverted overprint on the 10c black on lavender Scott #22a. Then the 1892 issue, Scott #31 5c of 50c blue, followed by the 'navigation and commerce' types complete to lfr and then virtual completion thereafter from 1902/04 series all the way through to after the war years etc, inc: the long series of 1905-28 complete, the surcharges complete, all the 1930s complete, similarly 1945 and 1947 defins etc. Also seen postage dues and other back of the book complete, leading on to a good collection of Inini virtually complete. Collections like this of such quality are hardly ever available today on the market, especially on this side of the Atlantic. Of course there are many stamps here, especially in the classics, where the Scott retail is much understated. A very good opportunity to buy a wonderful collection of this country with some excellent classics in tip top quality.[v]Est. $3000-3500

PHENOMENAL GERMAN PRESTAMP &: STAMPLESS POSTAL HISTORY COLLECTION One man’s life long collection has now become available in ten substantial albums. The collection has been enthusiastically formed, clearly with a passion for details with virtually every cover receiving its own informative write up. The collections contains well over 600 covers including many attractive ‘Schnorkel Brief’, as well as containing many covers with elaborate and excellent calligraphy. Also despite the large number of the covers contained in this collection the manner in which the covers have been stored means that the collection is both clear and easy to view. The sheer scale of the collection and the style of it’s presentation offer the viewer a huge variety of wide variety of pre-philatelic postal history. There are many German postmarks, many of which are scarce and mostly in excellent condition. The collection contains an eclectic mix of covers varying from large towns to smaller villages, as well as containing small and unusual postmarks from villages that no longer exist. The postmarks have a variety of dates listed on them with some of them as early as late 17th century through to the 19th century. The time span that this collection contains means that the viewer would not only gain insight into an important source of postal history but also some exceptional primary sources. The postmarks come in a wide range of styles including; concentric circles in blue, with origins from places such as Markoedenborg, Wolfenbuttel, Sarstedt, Selsingen, Bremen and Frankfurt etc. A portion of the covers received had their postmarks in red straight lines of which some came from Goettinger, Constanz, Bonndorf, Hufingen, etc. Other postmarks include of course, black straight line, with origins from places such as; Gnessen, Wiessensee, Kloetze, Raderstadt, Dinslaken, Imgen Broich, Kowalewo (which is now a part of Poland), Holzminden, Zempelburg (a province that was lost to Germany during the break up of the Prussian empire), Gnadenfeld, Ratzeburg, Swinemunde, Greofswald, Pelpin, Kowalso, etc. The black circle postmarks also contains a variety of small and relatively obscure villages including; Schmiedeberg, Schlochau, Donaveschingen, Culm, etc. The black semi ovals have a wonderfully mixed set of origins such as; Keoster Flenesbronn, Memmingen, Lubeck, Potsham, Stuggart, Urach, etc. The huge variety of the postmarks means that the collection includes semi ovals of different colours, including a blue semi oval postmark which come from various places as large as Braunscheweig to as small as Gaildorf. Also ‘blue box’ postmarks, includeing both towns and villages such as Oker, Dorum, Neustadt, etc. Plus various military correspondence including ‘Kaiser Franz Drenad. Regiment/ 2nd Battalion’ 1848 and a correspondence relevant to ‘12, Inf. Regiments Fusilier Bat’. While the majority of the albums contain a variety of keenly chronicled and historicized covers, book 9 particularly fascinates with the unusual selection of postmarks and correspondence including governmental, military, royal and civil service and other fascinating correspondence including good ephemera and collateral material as well. A healthy portion of the correspondence in book 9 relate to the Danish-German war often engaged in the late 18-19th century to establish the status of Schleswig-Holstein. Due to the large size of the collection there is very occasionally lesser quality covers yet overall this is certainly not at all apparent. Through the period of forming the collection the previous owner spent over 20000 Euro (equivalent to over $30000 at the time of press) to gain such a thorough and impressive range of chronologized postal history. He made some very astute purchases too, with each page clearly inventoried and with his costing over the years itemized at the beginning of each album, page for page. We have valued this collection at between $8000 to $10000, this is a conservative figure placing each cover at about $12 dollars each (i.e. about 8 euro each). There is very little material worth under $10 each. It is therefore a tremendous opportunity for a dealer to break down for stock or for a collector to build on in good quality. Offered intact as received, please allow plenty of time for viewing as you might well find this is one of the best lots in the German postal history section of the auction.[v]Est. $8000-10000

VOLUMINOUS GERMANY COLLECTION eight volumes including a useful range of locals 1945/47 with Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg Vorpommern, Schwerin, etc. Lots of good items here, highly specialized and neatly displayed with the possibility of rarities in Michel, if you have considerable patience! What is specifically good is that this collector has written it up well, using Michel numbers and consequently the job is made considerably easier of identification and possible verification. The only question is how good and methodical was the collector in his categorizing – from what we have checked with our limited knowledge in this very specialized and complex philatelic area, everything has distinct differences for its respective numbers and probably is therefore correct. Other good areas include DDR virtually complete from 1949 onwards, Berlin with the black o/ps complete mint never hinged and signed, similarly with the red o/p complete this time used. This is followed by 1949 UPU complete used, the Goethe series complete, the Berlin green o/ps, the Bears complete, the Berlin Philharmonic complete superb used etc and virtually every other good series, definitive or commemorative, including the 70pf green mint never hinged. Another useful book, this time Third Reich not quite complete but lots of sets to the 40 pf purple, as well as superb used pair of the Olympics m/s and other Hitler m/s permutations, including the scarce rouletted used and imperf used, as well as the 2 Reichsmark o/ps complete on Danzig etc through to 1945. Another book focuses on German States including a mint #1 Bavaria signed by Carl H. Zange, in our opinion obviously regummed and not counted accordingly. Plenty of other better imperfs including fascinating covers to investigate, ending with Wurttemburg. Other areas include Allied Occupation, also represented with highlights such as very fine used Red Cross and building m/s, the latter imperf and perf for Baden and the Red Cross for all three Zones, all cancels correct and contemporaneous, even the series themselves, not just the m/s, followed by a good range of posthorns o/ps, a specialised study of the buildings definitives ending with the Exportmesse Hannover 1949 superb used - this book is probably the most valuable here. Other volumes include German Empire from the shields onwards, with useful ranges of Germanias, through to the inflation issues, Zepps and better commems such as the Wagner with the 20pf and the 40pf mint never hinged! Also present West Germany virtually complete in the 8th and final volume, besides much more here than the above description. A very good old fashioned collectors collection well worth spending time on and a delight to view.[v]Est. $4750-5500

GERMANY POSTAL HISTORY 1945-1970 a small box filled to overflowing with about 500 items roughly divided into three groups: Federal Republic, Soviet and Allied Occupations, and Berlin with substantial value in all three groups including a wealth of covers in the $50 to $100 retail range with some even higher. Among the Federal Republic covers we noted significant value in commercial usages of the stamps of the late 1940s to early 1950s including 1948 Buildings issues, 1951 Posthorns as well as the highly collectable commemoratives of the early 1950s, majority are addressed to the United States. This section also contains dozens of FDCs from the early 1950s including 1949 Reconstruction set, 1952 Otto, National Museum (3), 1953 Transport (3), Stamp Exhibit, and 1955 Airmail set and finally a group of used Airletter sheets to the US. The Soviet and Allied Occupation section also represents substantial value especially among the French Zone with issues for Baden, Rheinland and Wurttemburg. Among the Soviet Zone we noted dozens of Locals for Dresden, Thuringen, Storkow, Strausberg and Grossraschen among many others. Also in this section is a small group of East Germany, most notably the 1950 DEBRIA S/S on FDC. Finally, the Berlin section is replete with several dozen examples of the 1948 Black Overprints and 1949 Red Overprints on cover along with significant value among the commemorative issues of the early 1950s with some FDCs. This is one of those remarkable cover lots that will be long remembered by every viewer with much Fine-VF and valuable material.[v]Est. $4000-5000

Third Reich material is the real strength of the second box which starts the Semi-Postal section while the third box holds Semi-Postal new issues and a small section of Danzig and Saar which should not be overlooked. Berlin nearly fills the fourth and the final box is jammed full with mostly mint sets from East Germany.
