![]() ![]() | RUSSIAN ZEMSTVOS COLLECTION an extraordinary collection with duplication, absolutely a once in a lifetime opportunity, representing mint and used in depth. The Zemstvos are not that often seen in collection format and this is an excellent range of these popular 19th century local issues of Russia. There are many mint, as well as used multiples and of course many singles. There are 1,640 of these very popular locals present and some of the regions represented at random here include Tichwin, Totma, Urshum, Tewer, Usty-Ssyssolsk, Kungur, Starobjelsk, Waldai, Welsk, Pskow, Rshew, Rjasan, Kortschewa, Lebedjan, Kolomna, Lgow, Luga, Lubny, Malmysch, Morschansk, Nikolsk, Nolinsk, Pskow, Schazk, Skopin, Schadrinsk, Ssolikamsk, Ssudsha,Starobjelsck, Ssarapul, Solotomoscha etc etc. Condition is remarkably good for these issues, with much never hinged or attractively used. It is particularly pleasing to see multiples, blocks of 4 or even larger even among the imperfs. It is difficult to imagine how such a good collection could be re-assembled as these Zemstvos are very tough to find today. Given the diversity and scope of this collection, it would probably take decades to replace even if that was possible. This high level of condition and quality is simply not that available to find in the market. This is a stunning collection of Zemstvos, much recommended for the specialist, collector or dealer-however it would be a shame to "break down" this collection as individual auction lots. It would be surely be much better to make it one of the better Zemstvos collections in the world. A joy to view, an exhibition standard collection and unquestionably an opportunity to buy, offered intact as received.[v] | Est. $20000-30000 |

![]() ![]() | RUSSIA HOLDING fascinating, quite disorganized but certainly absorbing amount of material housed in three substantial stockbooks, from the 19th century onwards, as well as a cover album filled with complete series, mint and used, that will take much time to organize. There is "off the beaten track" material for the pre-1917 and even some of the transition period to 1919 is useful with tremendous potential here. Virtually all the prices that we saw were old and sometimes places such as the Far Eastern Republic had stamps in quantity which add up quickly in Scott retail - besides much were under-priced anyway and there will be thousands of dollars of catalog just in this category alone. There are literally thousands of complete mint series in post WW2 Russia, as well as ‘key value’ definitives again in quantity in mint. Definitely an enjoyable lot to sort and categorize, probably ideal for the Russian enthusiast "stamp workaholic" looking for the distinct possibilities of finds. | Est. $1500-2000 |

![]() ![]() | SWITZERLAND POSTAL HISTORY HOLDING an important range of postal history housed in eleven volumes, one of them is bulging to the brim, from the 19th century onwards, with several many hundreds covers. The 20th century is the better part with more obvious items such as the NABA m/s, pro Patria 1936 m/s, the Aarau 1938 m/s (3), the small Zurich m/s of 1943 Geneva m/s of 1945 (2), the Basel Dove of Peace and various FDCs, some of which are expensive in Zumstein, particularly of the late 1940s and the early 1950s and not just in the semi-postals category. The pre- 1934 is also strong with the forerunner Pro9 Juventute on postcards, as well as the good 10rp Red commercially used (3) and all single usages and much more of the subsequent series, again commercially used, leading on to further FDCs as well as blocks of 4 etc. Also present a good range of airmails and this is possibly the best book, again with lots of non- Scott listed from the 1920s onwards, ie "Flugposts" some with denominations some not, all requiring a Zumstein to identify correctly. Other areas including winter flights, early glider flights, zeppelins, even earlier first flights, as well as lots of better airmail stamps on cover, philatelic and commercial usage. Another fascinating area was the propaganda, as well as various definitives on cover, censor markings registered, etc. The 19th century does have merit as well, including useful "Sitzende Helvetias" of different types and perforations, leading on to early turn of the century often with postage dues, through to an extensive study of tete-beche, including better inter-panneaus etc. Other areas include postal stationery used and certainly this collector had an eye for the unusual, as well being quality conscious ‘a la Suisse’! The more you study these books carefully the more is to discover. This description is just an outline. There are many covers here worth hundreds of dollars each and very few covers worth less than ten, with the majority in between that range. A really good collection that deserves a careful inspection, a delight to describe and view, much recommended.[v] | Est. $5000-6000 |

![]() ![]() /![]() | SWISS SOLDIER STAMPS COLLECTION one of the best collections of the 1930 and 40s we have had the pleasure to offer, nearly everything mint with much never hinged. Virtually everything is in tip - top condition and has been dutifully assembled regiment for regiment, battalion for battalion, Korps for Korps in order. The collector has succeeded in getting different permutations on every item collected - no mean feat given that this represents only an 8 year period. Therefore there are perf and imperf side by side in different colors, accompanied by the appropriate miniature sheet and above all where possible se-tenants. If there is any duplication at all we could not see it since everything had a difference, for example overprints, small but present were justified being in the collection, missing colors as well. The point is that there is well over 2300 and about 95 miniature sheets with virtually everything "one of a kind'. Here is the break of each volume: Volume 1 contains about 145 stamps with 7 m/s starting off with the 1939 swiss cross, "backer kompanie" with wheat and rifle with the last page the Mobilisation 1939 m/s. Volume 2 contains an impressive 769 stamps and 27 m/s, starting with a "Rgt. St. Jakob a.d. Birs" 1940 , ending with a "LST. VPF. KP" from 1943. Volume 3 contain 416 stamps and 19 m/s, beginning with a "Ter. Rgt. Bozberg" 1940, commemorating medieval warfare, finishing with a "M 5 A 6 F. LaZ" 1941/1942 . Volume 4 contains close to 400 stamps with 11m/s, The first of which is inscribed "3.Division", and the last being the "Feldpost 36" 1939. Volume 5 contains 320 stamps and 19 m/s with a page dedicated to cavalry and dragoons, the first stamp has "Brigade De Cavalerie 1 Service Actif 1940", all the way through to the last page with "Aktivdienst 1941 - 1945 Selbst, Zerst. Det 6".Volume 6 houses around 334 stamps and 11 m/s, the first page has a predominantly aircraft theme such as a red 1940 "Armeeflugpark Darc D'aviation D'armee" and the last page is a white cross "militarbrieftaubendienst". Some of the other better items seen include iconic "Flieger ABT.7", "Grenz - Besetzung 1939", "Fliegerabwehr Det.30", scissors cutting wing for "Flab Det.34", striking se-tenants for eagle "flieger Beob. Meldedienst S.R.S.A S.A.S.A", dove of peace for "detachement 15/ pig. voy. 15", "Escadron De Dragons 2", "Leichte Brigade 2", the cavalry of Bern, the "Winterthur Pferdestellung", the highly unusual 1941 "H.D. Baudet. 3/11", castle and helmet foot territorials for Battalion 174 to name but a few of the many hundreds of military categories here. If you look at this collection you will most certainly want to buy it all. This is offered intact as received and is a delight to view and describe.[v] | Est. $5000-6000 |
![]() ![]() ![]() | SWITZERLAND ACCUMULATION thousands of stamps and postal history in over 20 volumes, 19th and 20th century. No stockbooks here in this accumulation, mostly stamp collections, the balance is postal history in cover albums, with over 20 albums in total. Probably four fifths of the value is in stamps and one fifth in covers, or thereabouts!. This includes lots of 19th century, as well as 20th stamps and postal history. Absolutely a last minute entry with good miniature sheets, and good pro-juventutes, better strubeli, outstanding Stehende Helvetias and Sitzende Helvetias with many high cataloging items. The earlier classics from imperfs onwards with reference copies as well. Nevertheless nearly every album is worth hundreds of dollars each. A ‘must-sell’ instruction and the valuation reflects that. A bargain opportunity for a dealer, valued at $250 a pop across the board, now go figure! | Est. $5000-6000 |
![]() ![]() ![]() | SWISS SOLDIER COLLECTION OF STAMPS &: POSTAL HISTORY phenomenal collection assembled over the last 30 years, mint and used, as well as lots of good postal history often incorporated chronologically into the various albums of the collections. Much WWI leading on through to the 1940s, one of the most exciting ranges of these issues that we have had the pleasure to offer. For the most part there is systematic organisation with subtle differences, carefully presented step for step, disclosing the evolution of specific types occasionally with proofs, then imperfs and trial color designs etc. There are also lots of postal history items with unsurprisingly lots of military themes such as Artil lery/Abmarsch, horse cavalry, drummers, colored post cards as well as black and white, covering the gamut of Swiss soldiery. Also seen various batallion postal history often with concentric circle feldpost cancels with the appropriate regimental numeral stamps, even some collateral items such as military company lapels. There are thousands of items here, not forgetting good military sheets including imperfs etc. There are even albums specifically printed for "Soldaten Marken" with immense specialization within and others with pages often written up the good old fashioned way, with pen and ink The holding has to be seen to be appreciated, offered intact as received.[v] | Est. $4000-5000 |

![]() | SWITZERLAND "PTT" OVERPRINTS montreux, European Conference, Europa forerunner 500 F.D.C's. A recently unearthed hoard of these covers, all in pristine condition, postmarked the 22nd June 1959 with special European conference ‘Dove of Peace’. Every cover has the appropriate square and circle interweaved embossing, surrounded by the red ‘Conference Europeenne des Pit, Reunion Constitutive’. This cover up until recently would retail for 20euro or about $30 each. The catalog in Zumstein is 60 Swiss francs each cover, i.e. 30,000 Swiss francs or about $30,000. This is definitely an opportunity for while Europa issues in general have been hit, the forerunners far less so and this always was a better series before the increases in Europa. | Est. $3000-4000 |
![]() | "SWISS AIR" AN AIRLINES HISTORY IN POSTAL HISTORY! a very specialised, important collection housed in 15 volumes, unfolding the history of ‘Swiss Air’, chronologically organized from the inception of the 1950s onwards, with many scarce items that the specialist will appreciate. This is very much a collectors collection, he has gone out of his way to get virtually every conceivable permutation/ first flight and return relative to the development to ‘Swiss Air’. Apart from the more obvious Geneva to Los Angeles, Geneva to Malta, Zurich to Tokyo, Budapest to Zurich etc, there are also interesting joint flights with Lufthansa and Swiss Air right up to euro currency time. Other interesting areas include McDonnell Douglas ND11 flights and of course the stamps applied are not just of Switzerland, but many other coutries as well, often in connection with airlines TAP, Iberia, Air Baltic, Royal Brunei, Air Algerie, Gulfair, Cyprus Airways, Cross Air, Iran Air, Royal Air Marocco, Air Canada, Austrian Airlines, PIA etc. Among the thousands covers here every single one here tells a story. This is a phenomenal collection with possibly unique items present, a thoroughly recommended viewing. | Est. $2500-3500 |
![]() | SWITZERLAND POSTMARKS "A-Z" INCREDIBLE HOARD a lifetime's work here with an astonishing range of material with the overwhelming majority in tip-top condition, 'a la Suisse'! There are 1000s of envelopes each one individually labeled with villages, towns and cities - the latter by districts as well - for every conceivable part of Switzerland with many tens of thousands of postmarks, categorised, perhaps more. This is an astonishing feat built up patiently over the decades of collecting, often from buying in auction and stripping down collections as well as mixed lots of anything Swiss. Given that when it was shipped to us, it was placed in order alphabetically in these old envelopes- probably 3000++ of them (!) written up 'A-Z', for example Avers to Zofingen, stacked many columns high. We therefore ask viewers to do their best to keep the order as best as possible, as you plow through opening up these envelopes. Virtually everything we saw is 20th century but by no means all modern, far from it and the viewer will find that the key cirterion for this collector was to get the postmarks where and when they became available. It would not be an exaggeration to state that there are hundreds of potential postmarks collections here, all in Swiss quality, deserving to be methodically displayed 'A-Z’, either on album leaves or stockbooks which would then clearly show some of the more obscure villages and where the names of the towns have been changed over the years- or have linguistic differences depending on demographics. We only had time to go through a handful of the envelopes and it may well be that discoveries beyond the scarcity of the postmarks will be made. This is a thoroughly recommended viewing for a collector or dealer, due to its diversity and scope for potential development. A completely original holding, representing a tremendous opportunity for those with a passion for the postmarks of Switzerland, new and old. | Est. $2500-3000 |

![]() ![]() | SWITZERLAND "GRATIS" COLLECTION we decided to make this into a separate lot as we recognised that this is a rather important collection of these elusive stamps of 1871. Written up on a few album pages, these stamps were issued on purple paper between February and August 1871, specifically for member of the Members of the interned French Army who had entered Switzerland and were detained after the Armistice. The collection begins with a block of 6 of Zn PF #1 the purple lilac Gratis, in itself an unusual and scarce multiple, mint never hinged accompanied by a Royal Philatelic Society Certificate (1983) stating it is genuine, cat as singles 1650Swfr. Also on the same page and on the next page 2 examples of the Gratis, with 1 on front only sent from Kantons Glarus to Aube, the other on a somewhat overfolded and consequently with a tear at bottom of envelope - yet on cover - from Lausanne to Bordeaux France, this letter is very interesting and is from Sergeant Major E Moulong, a POW, writing to his father of a comrade who died of wounds, a most interesting primary source. The latter for its philatelic value is catalogued on cover on 1450Swfr in Zumstein, Znr PF #1. Accompanying this is a spectacular and rare block of 16 with only 1 stamp hinged of the Znr PF #1c, the rose brown lilac, cat as singles at 4000Swfr and is an extraordinary item in such multiple format. Also with this collection are further examples for reference studies including genuine. It would not be an exaggeration to state that this is the best collection of these 1871 Gratis issues we have ever offered.[v] | Est. $2400-2800 |

A quick glance reveals that there is substantial value in sets in the $10 to $30 range especially from 1930s and 1940s from both countries, however, the real strength is in the new issues which are extensive and continue up to about 1990. We also noticed a handful of Switzerland classics that are somewhat mixed. Generally, a fresh, clean group of Fine-VF material that should appeal to any bourse dealer. | Est. $2000-2500 | |

![]() ![]() ![]() | COMPREHENSIVE URUGUAY COLLECTION an excellent collection housed on Scott album leaves, mint and used, with several hundred stamps in a condition far above that is normally encountered. The collector had a particularly good eye for quality and it shows from page one onwards. For example with the Montevideo Suns Scott#5 180c green unused, as well as Scott #6 the 240c mint four margined with original gum, accompanied with certificate. Then some lovely mint and used government issues of 1859 with the so called "thin numerals" complete, all with generous margin copies and either fancy or neat oval cancels on the used. Similarly the "thick numerals" of 1860 is also complete, with excellent top values Scott #15, 16 and 17 used as well as #17a the 180c deep green again with generous four margins and original gum, accompanied with certificate. Then follows the 1864 type A5, Scott #18 - 23 complete, with the challenge of determining whether or not the salmon is present among the three 6c values. The next page is particularly interesting as it focuses on this collectors habit of inserting blank pages to place errors/varieties or simply stamps he liked. For example yet another 1858 240c Montevideo with a distinct shade of dull vermillion accompanied by 1859s with pairs and colored cancels, as well as unused 180c green unused "thick numerals" and much more, with this page alone having 10 more suns. Further highlights abound even into the 20th century including 1929/33 values to 10p mint, through to airmails 1928 10c to 3.8 p mint, 1929 1c to 10p complete series of 36 mint, with virtual completion throughout save major rarities. This is a most delightful collection to view and describe, particularly strong in both centuries and enhanced by both the quality as well as the specialization. | 2381 | ![]() ![]() | OLD TIME DEALER'S STOCK MINT SETS &: SINGLES 1910-1965 dozens of glassine boxes and old shoeboxes fill three large cartons. This is an old stock that was put away sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. For example, we noted a number of items marked at $1 or $2 that now sell in the $25 to $50 range and a few better marked in the $10 to $20 range that now sell for well over $100. So, although this is primarily a stock of new issues from the 1960s and early 1970s, a close look will reveal lots of worthwhile items in the $25 to $100 range with some much higher and some of the early material will prove to be NH. From the Austria stock we found the 1950 Bird Airmail set priced at $10 that now catalogs $388. Other better Austria include 1933 Deliverance of Vienna set, 1934 Costumes set of two (NH), 1936 Workers set (NH), while better Belgium include the 1918 Red Cross Charity set and 1933 Tuberculosis set (NH) along with a significant holding of the better charity sets of the 1950s. The France stock includes the 1927 first Airmail set, 1954 and 1957 Airmail sets, along with several better charity sets of the 1940s. Germany is similarly represented by several better sets of the Third Reich such as the 1933 2nd Hindenburg set, 1939 Nurburgring Overprints, 1945 Stormtroopers set, all NH. The Federal Republic period also contains better items such as the 1954 Heuss set (NH) with some Berlin. Turning to Eastern Europe, we spotted some better sets from Hungary such as 1913 and 1914 First &: 2nd Charity Overprint sets and the popular 1933 Airmail set. Other countries included Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Vatican City. The only British is confined to Great Britain and Ireland along with three boxes of Canada plate blocks. Among the Great Britain, we noted a number of the Phospher sets of the early 1960s. Considering the quality of this stock which is generally clean and Fine-VF along with the fact that the majority is NH, this will prove to be a very popular lot with the bidders.[v] | Est. $9000-12000 |
