JER April 25/10"í (initials are those of Joseph E. Ralph the B.E.P. director) and blue control number 420279 on reverse, Very Fine; unique. The terms "surface die" and "surface print" refer the letterpress printing, not offset printing as incorrectly presumed by previous students of these stamps.Letterpress tials required a special die to be prepared. B.E.P. records indicate master engravers Marcus W. Baldwin and Edward M. Hall prepared the die, finishing work on April 27, 1910. (Photo) (1-E1a)2,000.00

For the intaglio printing trials a master and three working dies were prepared. Master die B.E.P. "miscellaneous die" 7453 was ordered Nov. 24, 1909, with E. Shaffer assigned as engraver. The master die was hardened Dec. 8, 1909 and used to make transfer roll 13016. On Dec. 9, 1909 working dies 7474, 7475 and 7476 were created. Each of these was hardened and certified on Jan. 21, 1910. (Photo) (1-E1b Var)ECV 2,000-3,000

W. Werden at Mount Vernon, N.Y., Fine usage; the only example known to have passed through the mails. Mrs. Sarah L. Coe, President of the U.S. Automatic Vending Machine Co., and her sister, Mrs. Edward W. Werden, often made trips to Washington to meet with B.E.P. Director Joseph Ralph regarding the need for coils without paste-ups. This piece was prepared by Coe during a visit to Washington and mailed to Werden. (Photo) (1-E1e)ECV 1,500-2,000
0838()#1-E1f, Hamilton Deep Red Coil, Perf. 12 Vertically, rich color, horizontal crease, Fine appearance;this is the only example to appear on the philatelic marketplace since 1939 and may in fact be unique; listed in Scott but not priced. The perforated 12 test coils were printed by letterpress and show an entirely different method of depicting the shading. In particular, face shading is composed of open squares, while the intaglio test stamps show line shading. Comparison with intaglio printing shows a clearly inferior rendition of the portrait. In addition letterpress printed stamps were determined to be an easier form of printing to counterfeit. The experiment was considered unsucessful and was not utilized for postage stamp production at that time. (Photo) (1-E1f)ECV 1,000-1,500
