0008#9, 9a, 1c Green, Antique "Canal", partial mint sheet of 90 from Stage IV, lacking pos. 38-39, 48-49, 88-90 and 98-100, but including pos. 26 showing antique "CANAL" (Scott #9a) and pos. 68 showing the "Z" of "ZONE" faint (CZSG 9.3), well centered, usual tropical original gum, some perf separations, some small faults including a dozen stamp with light crease, otherwise Fine-Very Fine. 0009#9c, 1c Green, "Canal Zone" Inverted, a highly desirable sound used example of this incredibly rare error, with rich color on crisp white paper, "Canal Zone" in seven bars cancel (Entwistle K1), fresh and Fine; probably only a single sheet received an inverted overprint, it was not noticed by philatelist and therefore used for postage, > only six copies have been recorded, five of which are used, > one of the great rarities of the Canal Zone (CZSG 9c). 0010#9d, 1c Green, "Canal Zone" Double, a spectacular mint example of this extremely rare error, wonderfully well centered within large margins, plus it retains an exceptionall overall freshness, with full clean original gum which has only been lightly hinged, Extremely Fine and choice; probably only a single pane received a double overprint, this error was not noticed by philatelists and most were used; today > only twenty examples are recorded, ten used and ten mint, > virtually all of the ten mint copies have a problem including marks on the face, surface scrapes, toning, creases, no gum, etc., > this extraordinary mint single is the finest example in existance > (CZSG 9d). A Surcharge, Panama Overprint in Rose Brown, an incredibly rare > full sheet of 100, > from the second printing of which only 60 sheets were produced, plus it is from the incredibly rare stage V overprint of which a mere 10 sheets are believed to have been printed (CZSG 14.Bb), showing the "Canal" in antique type on pos. 26 (Scott #14d; ten copies issued of which only four have been recorded), "Zone" in antique type on pos. 48 (Scott #14e; ten copies issued of which only five have been recorded) and numerous minor varieties, but most remarkable of all is that > the bottom vertical pair (pos. 81 and 91) have the left "Panama" omitted due to a fold over, > with both "Panama" being printed on the reverse of the selvage at lower left (unlisted in Scott or Plass), beautifully centered, intact perforations, full clean original gum, several h.r.'s, most stamps Never Hinged, numerous hinges in the side selvage from having been mounted on a thin card for display (peelable), Very Fine; > a unique and highly exhibitable sheet deserving of placement in the finest Canal Zone collection. > (Photo) (14c)ECV $5,000-$7,500

A Surcharge, Panama Overprint in Rose Brown, "Zone" in Antique Type, a handsome right sheet margin imprint block of nine, pos. 38-40, 48-50, 58-60, stage V overprint, pos. 48 the variety, quite fresh and intact, original gum, Fine-Very Fine; a very rare and desirable multiple; > only ten "Zone" in antique type stamps were issued with the rose brown overprint, of which only five copies have been recorded, > probably not including the two examples offered in this sale (CZSG 14.Ba.e).
