Carlton Putnam also had another claim to fame, his racial bias which he had proudly put into print included the books ""Race and Reason"" as well as ""Race and Reality"". Officially, Eastern was launched on May 1, 1928, when five airmen took off at night in 200-horsepower open-cockpit Mailwing airplanes each flying 300 pounds of mail between New York and Atlanta. In 1938, with a group of associates, Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker purchased the company and became President and General Manager. On August 7, 1953, he became chairman of Eastern's board. On May 27, 1975 Frank Borman, the Famous Astronaut became President and Chief operating executive officer. He was Commander of the 1968 Apollo 8 Mission and led the first team of astronauts to leave Earth's gravity and orbit the Moon. The Apollo 8 mission provided mankind's first close-up view of the lunar surface and of the dark side of the Moon. In the 1980's, Eastern fighting to keep its doors open, sold majority share holdings to Frank Lorenzo, owner of Texas Airlines. Lorenzo, filed for restructuring of Eastern Airlines under the bankruptcy laws. Lorenzo in his desire to have greater control over the airline industry brought in non union workers and created a new air fare war that many airlines could not compete against a non union airline. Carrier after carrier had filed for bankruptcy. Lorenzo took over several airlines including People Express, Continental and New York Air. Many felt Lorenzo was only interested in purchasing defunct air carriers in order to strip the carriers of its assets. Rare varieties of this well known and historic airline. Vignette with allegorical man and woman with torch and cadaceus in clouds with airplanes. Odd shares, blue border. Founded in 1976 by Irving T. Tague, Midway started flying in 1979 from its main hub at Midway Airport in Chicago. One of the first new airline companies to begin operating after the federal Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, Midway Airlines started with three DC9-15 airplanes. It flew between Chicago and Cleveland, Detroit and Kansas City. By the end of 1982, Midway served 15 cities with a fleet of 16 airplanes. In 1984, it bought the assets of the bankrupt Air Florida. By the late 1980s, Midway owned more than 70 planes, flew to 50 airports, employed 6,000 people and had annual revenues of over $400 million. The expansion continued in 1989, when Midway purchased the Philadelphia operations of Eastern Airlines; but this venture ended up driving the company into bankruptcy. 2) Standard Equipment Co., Inc. In the late 1940s, Ray Petersen was consolidating a handful of small carriers into a major airline and by 1947 had created Northern Consolidated Airlines. Ray decided it was time to create permanent fishing lodges in the Katmai country, soon to be known as the ""Angler's Paradise Lodges"". Research indicated that Ray's Northern Consolidated Airlines fishing camps were the first full-time sport fishing lodges in Alaska. Rare pioneer Alaska Airline Stock. Federated BNC. XF."
