People Express Airlines or ""PEOPLExpress"", was a U.S. no-frills airline that operated from 1981 to 1987. The company was founded by Don Burr, Gerry Gitner and several others, who resigned from Frank Lorenzo's Texas International in order to start the company. In 1985, People Express bought out Denver-based Frontier Airlines. The combined company became the United States fifth largest airline, with flights to most major U.S. cities, as well as an additional transatlantic route to Brussels. People Express also purchased Britt Airways and Provincetown-Boston Airlines (PBA) during this period, both small carriers with routes in the midwest, northeast and Flordia. People Express was forced to sell itself entirely to Texas Air Corp. and ceased to exist as a carrier on February 1, 1987. SCBNC. XF." (Photo) 175-350

373 Saturn Airways Inc. Stock Specimens "FL. 1971. All 3 with vignette of winged Mercury and planet. 1) > 100 shares with blue border. 2) < 100 shares with brown border. 3) 100 shares with green border. Saturn Airways was one of the founding member of the National Air Carrier Association, Inc. (NACA), an air carrier trade assocation. One of the reasons for forming the association was to maintain a strong relationship with the Department of Defense. Because the ""Federal Aviation Act of 1958"" required Supplemental Carriers to be certificated, the Department of Defense (DOD) made a decision to only contract is passenger and cargo air transportation services to certificated air carriers. In 1972, NACA was one of the initial members appointed to the National Defense Transportation Association Military Airlift Committee. This Committee was established as an official government advisory committee to assist to Commander-in-Chief, Military Airlift Command and later the Commander-in-Chief United States Transportation Command, in better understanding the commercial aviation community and how the civilian air carriers could better assist the air transportation needs of the Department of Defense. In December 1967 and January 1968, respectively, Saturn took delivery of two Douglas DC-8 Super 61CF jets. The airline was initially known as All American Airways and used Curtiss C-46 Commando aircraft. In 1960 it changed its name to Saturn Airways. Larger Douglas DC-7 aircraft were purchased in 1963 and in 1965 Saturn acquired AAXICO Airlines. In 1967 and 1968, Saturn took delivery of two Douglas DC-8 Super 61CF jets that allowed it to operate transcontinental cargo and charter flights, some of which included military flights to Vietnam. Between 1968 and 1974 it had as many as two DC-8 Series 50 planes in its inventory and added a third Super 61CF in 1972. After absorbing the assets of defunct Universal Airlines in May of 1972, it added nine Lockheed L-188 Electra aircraft to its fleet. Also includes miscellaneous correspondence and LDP vignettes. It was formed in 1917 when Acme Markets merged with four other Philadelphia area grocery chains into American Stores.
