The newspaper was put up for sale after the previous owner, Col. Eleverson died of a heart attack and his sister who inherited it decided to sell it. On March 5, 1930, that controlling interest was bought by Curtis-Martin Newspaper Inc. through its publications on the Public Ledger. Reportedly, the price was $11 million-half in cash, the remainder in promissory notes. The president of the purchasing company was Cyrus H.K. Curtis, also head of the Curtis Publishing Co. (which published the Saturday Evening Post) and the publisher of the Public Ledger, the Evening Ledger and the New York Evening Post. This bond is dated almost 7 months later, so it can be assumed that this series of bonds delt with the purchase and financing of the newspaper. Please see the related bond ""Curtis-Martin Newspaper, Inc."", which evidently was involved in this transaction, since both were dated the same day. Both bonds add up to a total of 10 Million dollars, close to the 11 million paid for the newspaper. Rare matching pair of complete bonds. SBNC. VF." (Photo) |
