In 1903, John D. Rockefeller and his associates gained control of the majority of the stock. Colorado Fuel & Iron was once the largest coal company in the state of Colorado. In 1914 the company became notorious for the Ludlow Massacre. The Ludlow massacre was the death of about 20 people during an attack by the Colordo National Guard on a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and their families, including women and children, at Ludlow, Colorado in 1914. The strike was orgainized by the United Mine Workers of America against the Rockefeller owned Colorado Fuel & Iron Company as well as the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company and the Victor-American Fuel Company.
