0593 U.S. Zoological Society of Philadelphia Unique Printing Plate. 19--, ca.1900-1910. Life Member Certificate. 12x14 inches. A well used printing plate with hairlines from cleaning, but still bright and lustrous. A few minor oxidized spots are found in the middle of the plate. Vignette by James Smillie called "Lions at Home" is found on the top with pheasant or turkey at bottom with flowers in vases on left and right. Includes original paper wrapper from archival storage. Imprint of American Bank Note Company, Philadelphia on bottom. This organization manages the Philadelphia Zoo. It was founded in 1859 and opened in 1871, which gave it the honor of being the first zoo in America. This Unique certificate printing plate is also represented in this sale by another lot of a single unique specimen certificate printed directly from this plate, in all probability, 100+ years ago. 0594 U.S. Wild Animal Kingdoms Limited. 1972. 100; 500 Shs. 2 different specimen stock certificates. Red "Specimen" overprints and POC's. Choice uncirculated. Evidently this company did not survivet. Certificates have legend on top stating "Certificate Representing Shares Owned By Non-U.S. Person Transferable Only Through Authorized Non-U.S.Transfer Agent.
