Printing Plates

1616

Springfield Counterfeit or Facsimile Confederate Printing Plates. ND, (ca.1930âs). Included are 9 different blocks of 25 (5 by 5) of CSA #1 or 4; CSA #2; CSA #6 or 7; CSA #8; CSA, #9; CSA #10; CSA #11; CSA #13; CSA #14. In addition there is a photo-litho block of 9 of this same stamp with the metal a purple color on steel grey as well as 2 single mounted impressions of either CSA #1 or CSA #4 and CSA #13. All are mounted on approximately 1 inch thick wood blocks. The stamp designs were taken from copyrighted drawings of August Dietz that were illustrated in 1919. They were produced by Tatham Stamp Company of Springfield Massachusetts . Originally there were 14 different stamps that were produced in this facsimile series. These stamps were widely distributed and still fool the beginning and uninformed collector even today. These plates could be an important part of a Confederate postage stamp reference collection and are historic (which are footnoted in the Scott catalog). Unique group that should be seen. We begin our discussion with the Springfield Facsimiles as these are the fakes that are most commonly seen. Here is the story behind these fakes: Beginning in the mid 1930's a set of 14 counterfeits of the Confederate General Issue stamps was made and sold by a stamp dealer in Springfield, Mass. These facsimiles were also used in the so-called TASCO Booklets prepared in 1941. TASCO stands for Tatham Stamp Company of Springfield, Mass. In order to make the counterfeits, a set of original drawings made by August Dietz in 1919 were used. The drawings were copyrighted, and the use of these drawings was done without the permission of August Dietz. These counterfeits were made and sold as singles or as blocks of four in either unused or used condition. Since they originated in Springfield, Mass they have come to be known to collectors as the "Springfield Facsimiles." Protests over these fakes were issued at the time, and the maker then agreed to stop selling the bogus used ones and to put the word "facsimile" (sometimes misspelled as "facsimilie") on the backs of the unused stamps. But a number had already been sold, so these fakes exist both with and without the word "facsimile" on the back. And there are still some "Springfield Facsimiles" floating around with phony postmarks, and some have even been used to create phony covers. These fakes are everywhere and still fool many of the uninformed collectors today. The 14 Springfield Facsimiles are illustrated below. The Springfield Facsimiles were all printed on paper that was far different from the paper used for the genuine stamps. Many of the facsimiles were printed on a bleached white paper while others were printed on a yellowish newsprint type paper. Being familiar with the papers is the best way to tell the difference between these facsimiles and the genuine stamps. On the fakes that are not marked "Facsimile" on the back, here is how to distinguish them from the real thing -- ð The CSA #1 and #4 facsimiles differ from the originals in the paper used and in the overall appearance. The facsimiles have a flat appearance, and the vertical lines under the value are incomplete or missing altogether. ð The CSA #2 and #5 facsimiles differ from the originals in the paper used and in the appearance of the portrait design and the general flat appearance. Some of these facsimiles are termed the "pouting mouth" design because of the appearance of Thomas Jefferson's lower lip. Also, the facsimiles have distinct cross-hatching around the portrait whereas the genuine stamps have only a suggestion of cross-hatching. ð The CSA #3 facsimile is the most dangerous. Again it is the paper that is different. Also, in the facsimiles there are various missing periods after the "C.S.A." and the crossbar of the "T" of "TWO" is usually not connected to the upright bar. ð CSA #6 and #7 facsimiles are 1mm narrower than the originals and the lines of color in the background and the face are the same intensity. In the originals, these lines of color are darker in the background and lighter on the face. ð The facsimiles of CSA #8, #9, #10, #11, #12, #13 should fool no-one. The original stamps are all engraved whereas the facsimiles are not engraved. Therefore, the facsimiles have neither the look nor the feel of an engraved stamp. Instead, the facsimiles have a flat smooth feel and appearance. ð The CSA #14 facsimile is clearer and more detailed than the original but still has a somewhat dull appearance and was printed on very white paper. The facsimile is also 1mm taller than the original.Est. $7500-10000

Original Confederate, Altered Unissued Denomination, Copper Printing Plates. ND, (ca.1862). 34 different copper printing plates of single stamp impressions cut from original printing plate sheet of 100 or 400 and mounted on stamp sized wood blocks by De La Rue. (one of the plates is grey and looks like steel, not copper). In order to use the plates for printing, it appears that they were cut very close by a thin blade vertically, but evidently the stamps above and below horizontally were sacrificed in order to leave excess metal to mount the stamps to the wood blocks so that they could be used to successfully print with. The upper and lower border of the excess metal is very uneven due to the way it was separated. All of these except for one seem to be from the original printing plate that was cut up and dispersed many decades ago and possibly right after the Civil War. Though not official Confederate issued stamps, these printing plates still represent an important and interesting part of Confederate philatelic history and could be considered essay stamp printing plates of an issue that almost came into existence, Condition overall is Fine to XF with toning and minor wear. A few have small scratches, but overall are in excellent shape. This is a unique opportunity to acquire an important and authentic Confederate printing plate in quantity. When the rate increased to 10c for all letters (per 1/2 oz) on 1 July 1862 and since the 1c rate was never adopted, the Confederate government again asked De La Rue &: Co for plates and stamps this time in 10c and 2c denominations. Being pressed for a delivery, De La Rue had no time to develop a new design so therefore altered the original designs to incorporate the changed rates. The plates were shipped and did successfully run the blockade. However, no official stamps were ever printed by the Confederacy from these plates. The altered 10c plate was subsequently cut into sections, and parts of this mutilated plate have long been known. The original 400 subject plate of the 2c value was also discovered much later, and numerous "private printings" in a variety of colors have been made from this 2c altered plate as well as from the remaining segments of the 10c altered plate. These reprints have been widely distributed and are often mistaken for genuine CSA stamps by uninformed collectors. Est. $5000-7500
